RE: General Book Club ChatI think Tony makes a very valid point. It does have the feel of being a little frantic when the discussion begins as soon as the voting is finished. Those who happen to have already read the book can launch in straightaway, but anyone who only buys it after the winner is officially declared may not be ready to join a discussion for 2 or 3 weeks - and by then it feels like turning up very late at a party. |
RE: General Book Club ChatOn the point that Chitma raised, everyone's opinion on a book is welcome and we don't shout down anyone who happens not to agree with the opinions of others - hey, this is KUF, not Amazon! ![]() A book is like a garden carried in the pocket. ~Chinese Proverb

RE: General Book Club ChatI actually prefer the way the book club is now. I have suggested some of the choices recently, and if we had to wait until the end of the month to start the discussion then I would have forgotten some of the finer points of the story as I had read other books in the meantime, thus making my contribution to the discussion a bit feeble. The way things are now, those of us who have already read the book can kick things off as soon as the book wins, and others can join in as they read the book. Only happy when I am immersed in a good Kindle book

RE: General Book Club ChatThere are only so many free hours in the day and spending them reading something that I wouldn’t pick up outside of a BC choice is a waste of that precious time for me. I do recognise the argument about ‘getting outside one’s comfort zone’ and ‘you never know you might like it’ and other such good points but I feel I already do this by having a wide selection in my normal day to day reading. I think this stems from a short time I spent in a real world BC when, after only a few months, I came to the conclusion …… why spend time reading something just because I have to when there is so much out there that I want to read but just don’t have the time. Occasionally I may find the odd BC choice is actually something I would read however I often have a ‘chosen by me’ book on the go at that point and another couple of ‘must read next’ books waiting in the wings. I value greatly all the book discussion that goes on in the rest of KUF and really like taking part in that but I’m just not really a book club person I suppose. Doesn’t stop me grabbing something that’s been highlighted in the BC as a great read though ha-ha ![]() ![]() Dave B We parted company my Kindle 3 & me

RE: General Book Club ChatYou might possibly be a Book Club person , just you haven't found the right club! The good thing about the KUF BC is that you can "sit out" a discussion if you don't fancy the particular book, without appearing too anti-social. If in general you don't go much with the consensus choce of books then the club is probably not right for you. On the other hand you may just be a strong minded individualist!
