RE: The discussion of Room (the winning book for December)

Just finished Room and I whilst I found it hard to put down I do see what those who didn't like it mean. It is quite difficult to get your head round Jacks narration at first, but after a while it starts to become rather natural reading. And even though the grammar is rather awkward, you do understand what he is trying to say.
This is not the kind of book I would ever think of reading normally, but after seeing the review on the TV Book Club on More 4 last week I was encouraged to buy it.
As I already said, I couldn't put this book down, I was desperate to see were it would end, however, I always had this nagging feeling as I read that in real life, being locked up for all those years would have been far more traumatic. I didn't quite get the sense of the true hell it must have been. Had the story been about someone who had been locked up for 7 weeks for example, I think I might not have felt that narrative didn't quite hit the right level of despair.
Then again, this was written through the eyes of a 5 year old who was born in captivity, had it been written by Ma, an adult, it would have been a totally different story.
Any book that can keep me hooked like this tho deserves at least 4/5!Clapping hands

I agree. It then might have been something I would read, but still not at that price.

I may have found it easier to read then also Margaret, but i think the whole point & success of this book was it being narrated by Jack.
I also agree with Jo Brands comment on More4 TV book club, when she said we see enough of this depressing stuff in the newspapers, why would we want to escape into fantasy with it too.
Its finally come down in price though to £2.80. Bit late for the book club though.

RE: The discussion of Room (the winning book for December)

Just finished the book this morning. I was intrigued to begin with, and even moved past jack's annoying narrative to learn about their captivity from the child's point of view. after a while though it began to get redundant and I was glad that I'd heard Jo brand say they escaped halfway through as I was looking forward to something different happening. The escape was hard to believe though, and I just didn't enjoy their story on the Outside. Also find it hard to believe that Ma would have let him keep that rug.

I do hope that they don't continue to give too much of the plot away on the TV Book Club. I did find that a bit out of order.

I suppose so, but that's what you and I found so hard to take.

I prefer upbeat books as well. Nothing like a good HEA to give me happy tears. Heart

The price is still sky high in the US and so are the rankings.

I feel exactly the same about Captain Corelli's Mandolin! I have never got beyond chapter one - and that had rave reviews at the time! Life would be boring if we all thought the same!

What I Read

RE: The discussion of Room (the winning book for December)

I wasn't sure I wanted to read Room as I didn't think it was the type of book I would enjoy. Then I watched The TV Book Club when they were reviewing it and finally decided to buy it and luckily got it at the bargain price of £2.80 on the Kindle.

I finished reading it a couple of days ago and have to say I really enjoyed it. I found it very moving in places and actually cried whilst reading the part where Jack is trying to escape! I wasn't sure I would enjoy the second half of the book but found by the end of the book that I didn't want it to finish. I was very shocked when Spoiler. Now a couple of days after finishing the book I'm still wondering about Jack and how he's coping in the Outside.
