Welcome to the LoveFilm Section

As the LoveFilm service is now an important part of the Kindle Fire eco-system, I have decided to have a small section of the forum dedicated to LoveFilm where we can discuss everything from service itself to movies, TV and games available through it.

I must confess that personally I have only recently become a member, thanks to the Kindle Fire and my growing irritation with Sky.

For anyone who has not yet joined and has a love for film or video games, I would highly recommend it, particularly as you receive a free 30 day trial during which you can immediately cancel the service before being billed if you are not entirely satisfied.

I had also looked at Netflix as a viable alternative, but have to say I was less than impressed with the range of films on offer. If you have ever wondered why Netflix make it nigh on impossible to browse their film selection (even as a member) this probably goes some way to explaining.

Finally, and I'll make no exuses for this, if you want to join and click through from the banner below, you will help towards the funding of this forum.

RE: Welcome to the LoveFilm Section

We were members of LoveFilm before it came to KF, but have now cancelled our annual subscription and are waiting to hear whether they will give us back the money we have paid until May 2013, which is in dispute. We received several discs which were faulty and unwatchable. Watching on line is different, but so many of the discs you receive are unwatchable.

We have Lovefilm as a years subscription came free with the TV we bought.
It is the streaming version only. We have had the discs by post before, but wouldn't pay for it again.
The streaming hasn't been too bad and we have watched a fair few older films.
Some of their newer films are only a year or so old.

We have also had a trial of Netflix in the past and their catalogue really is dire. We didn't find a single film we searched for and ended up not using at all as the selection was so poor.

We did the Netflix trial too, but really, there is nothing I want to watch. Sad

I'm hoping that the majority of the world cinema DVDs may be in better shape than the more mainstream ones.

RE: Welcome to the LoveFilm Section

Just started the Netflix free trial and could only find one film that I wanted to see and didn't already have on DVD ('Troll Hunter').

Wallowing in the nostalgia of a couple of old TV series ('Jonathan Creek' and 'Drop the Dead Donkey') and I'll try some of the TED talks but I suspect I'll run out of things I want to watch before the free trial finishes.

Will sign up for the free trial of LoveFilm but it doesn't really look that much better.

RE: Welcome to the LoveFilm Section

Lovefilm is better on the Kindle Fire HD than on other gateways such as Sony, LG and Samsung smart TVs and Blu Ray players. On the other gateways a lot of the content available on the Lovefilm website is not available such as most of the TV series.

Netflix works by recommending titles based on your previous viewing history and is heavily weighted towards titles which you have rated. So it's important to rate every film you watch. In the Netflix app there is the "Genres" screen which lists more titles but whether they are all films available I don't know, probably not.

I'd say that the Kindle Fire HD is probably the best device on which to view Lovefilm but obviously costs more than, say, a smart Blu Ray player but not a lot more. It can also connect to a TV with a mini/micro HDMI to HDMI lead but there is only up to HD Ready 720p HD and not Full HD 1080p.

What's the output like when using LoveFilm connected to a TV? Some people had reported problems with certain apps (not specifically LoveFilm) with framerate problems and audio sync issues.

It's just using the TV as an alternative screen so the picture and audio sync is exactly the same as on the Fire HD except that the picture is bigger which is where the problems might start. Whether HD is effective over SD largely depends on the size of the screen and becomes more apparent as the size of the screen gets bigger. So essentially on a small screen there is little difference between SD and HD but on a big screen HD will provide a better picture.

I have a now aging Sanyo 32" HD ready 720p and watching Lovefilm and Netflix is pretty good given that it's being streamed by a tablet. There is loss of the refinements I get on my Sony smart Blu Ray such as 24p and upscaling which means that sometimes there are motion problems which are not detectable on the small screen of the Fire HD: Fast motion against a static background is sometimes blurred or smudged, for example. But that depends on the options available on your tv.
