Silk Browser Getting You Down?

Amazon's Silk browser is ok, but it does have some annoying quirks. There are a couple of alternative options, but none direct through the Amazon Appstore.

Mobile Firefox
Sadly, recent versions of mobile Firefox don't seem to work and crash on the Kindle Fire HD, but an older version which is still pretty good can be downloaded from :
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org...

This is version 10 of the browser and is the last stable version reported working on Kindle Fire HD.

Google Chrome
Google's Chrome browser works pretty well and can be downloaded from :
http://www.androiddrawer.com...

Note, to install these, you will need to enable third party app installation from your settings.

Dolphin is a nice browser, but not available in the Amazon Store. Currently I'm using the browser built into the LastPass app which is in the store and works well on the Fire. You need a LastPass subscription (at the enormous cost of $1 per month) but it securely manages all your online passwords for you which is a godsend as I use passwords that are not easy to type on the Kindle's keyboard.

I've just uploaded the process for a different app at http://www.kuforum.co.uk.... You would just need steps 1 - 4 and 7 - 12, substituting the name of the browser's .apk file as appropriate.

Hi Lou

As I use Chrome on my laptop I'm keen to use this on the Fire HD if poss.

I clicked on your hyperlink and this zip file has downloaded to my device. How do I now get this set up to replace my silk browser please?

Thanks

It's supposed to be an apk file, so it may be that it has downloaded as a zip due to Silk mistaking the file type.

What I'd suggest is getting ES File Explorer as a free download from the Amazon app store and then renaming the file in Downloads folder to .apk, you should en be able to click on it and install straight from ES.

RE: Silk Browser Getting You Down?

Thanks once again Lou.

Your instructions have worked perfectly!

A couple of minor points that you may be able to help me with please? I surmise that the Web tab on the homepage will always default to the Silk browser, or can this be changed to default to Chrome? Also when viewing a web page in Chrome on the Fire there appears no facility to select that page for printing - or do you know of a way to do this?

Many thanks

Sadly I don't know the answer to either of those. Hopefully someone else may be able to shed some light.
