Can't manage to switch the PaperWhite off!

I received my PaperWhite yesterday, looks great apart from the manual says to switch off "press the on/off button for 7 seconds"
I have done this several times but every time I open the case I keep it in the PaperWhite is on and showing the last page I was reading; can't understand what I may be doing wrong!
Has anyone got the same problem?

Could it be the same as the Kindle Fire where there is an automatic open/close when you use a cover? I have the KF and that's how it works.

Thanks for the reply. I have an iPad and should have thought of that; silly me!
My PaperWhite case is a Tuff-Luv Embrace and have just emailed the seller and they confirm that the auto sleep is activated by a magnet in the case.

When I first got my case, and opened it. It keep on turning on, it took me a few hours working out what was actually happening.

I was sitting there, opening and closing my case, turning it off, closing the case and then opening etc. Before I clicked and worked out, that it was sleeping/waking when the case was being closed or open. I do think it is a good feature.
