Problem with USB Transfer -

Problem with USB Transfer

When I transfer documents from my computer to my Kindle 3 via USB and then eject the Kindle, they do not show up on the list until I download something directly from Amazon.

Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

It just takes time, I believe.
You are putting them into the \Documents sub-folder on the Kindle?
Once there, and once the home page is refreshed, they should be present. Refresh it by going to a collection and back? Or by moving a book to another collection? But it should appear without these tricks...

Also make sure that you are only using one of the recognized file types:

Kindle (.AZW, .AZW1). Text (.TXT), Unprotected Mobipocket (.MOBI, .PRC)

If you transfer anything else to your Kindle via USB it will not show up on your Kindle. I made this mistake as a newbie with HTML files which will actually only work on the Kindle when you send them via your Kindle email address.

Mine works.................got loads of PDF lists etc

The problem seems to have been a corrupted PDF. I noticed that whenever I restarted the Kindle it always reported the same ten files present and then went on walkabout before reporting the rest about 15 minutes later. Confused

Evidently the first thing it does on eject and restart is to check the local files in creation order to see if any are viewable (I might have deleted some) It doesn't seem to bother checking downloaded files since it assumes you will not delete them, but on restart it clears the whole booklist and doesn't display any until the check on the local files is complete. On eject it doesn't bother to clear the list - it evidently makes the changes as they are found.

That's why the newly transferred USB files never showed up. The check went haywire on the 11th file and never got round to the new ones. Whenever I downloaded something, the Kindle knew it didn't have to check for deleted files, so it displayed all the new ones since the last check - including the ones that had transferred by USB. Blush

So if this happens to anyone else - restart your Kindle and see if the process stalls after only some of your files are reported present. If so, re-attach your Kindle to your computer and list the contents of the Documents folder in creation date order. Then delete the local file next after the ones that were successfully displayed.
