It really depends on what they want their Kindle for. If it's for reading only and they have other means of accessing internet media, then maybe a straightforward Kindle will be ok. I'm just playing around with my Kindle Fire which arrived today and loving it, but this is more than just an e-reader.

What I Read

RE: Kindle Fire HD - Well worth the wait.

I got mine yesterday and it is fabulous.

I've been transferring some of my music to it and it sounds brilliant on the speakers. I also read for an hour last night and i found it to be a good experience- it is a bit different to what I have been used to with my kindle keyboard but my eyes didn't seem any tired than usual and i soon got used to the bright screen.

This evening I have been playing Mah-jong (one of the free ones) and wasted an hour playing it (got carried away!)

I've also downloaded some action games which play very well, and have watched a few minutes of poltergeist on Lovefilm.

App's seem to work well, and there is a large selection-nearly everything i had got on my android phone is available, and there are some available which look interesting which are only available on the Amazon app store.

My case for it, which I got from an eBay seller in Hong Kong fit's it like a glove- am i allowed to post an eBay link to the case i got for it? It was a bargain at just over £6.00 including post and packing, and is the same colour and material as my old kindle keyboard case and is of a really nice quality- obviously for that price you aren't getting real leather, but it is sturdy and looks good as well as holding it well.

I don't think I have anything negative to say about it- the only thing i can even think to criticise is the lack of a plug charger and perhaps the traditional Amazon minimal packaging, theoretically ( mine was delivered by Royal Mail in the cardboard box and it thumped onto the floor- i don't want to think what happens in Royal Mail sort centres- i used to work for a catalogue company and the way things got treated was something else!) I'm sure lots of research has gone into designing the packaging though, and it is a lot less frustrating to get into then the usual polystyrene layers of packaging!

Very Happy Hayley

RE: Kindle Fire HD - Well worth the wait.

I'm really happy with my KF HD, as already said here, it was sooo easy to set up.
I bought mie from Waterstones this afternoon and I've aleady put my own ebooks on it - they are children's picture books - and I am very pleased with the quality of the colours, just how I wanted them, bright and vibrant!

Now I'm linking it to my phone, using the phone as a hot spot, I'll be able to check my sales etc. on it, I can see much more clearly on the KF.

Love the feel and look of the screen too.

Can you read in bright sunlight with Fire HD ( That is if any of you have had any bright sunlight to test it)?

I'll let you know - when we eventually get some bright sunlight! Tongue I suspect though that the standard e-ink Kindle will be much better in sunlight.

RE: Kindle Fire HD - Well worth the wait.

I've been in two minds whether to go for the Fire or a Google Nexus. Basically, it is to replace a broken Nintendo DS that my kids only really used quite rarely and only had a couple of games for, so the idea is that most of the time it will be for me. I can't seem to find a "browse the apps available" bit on Amazon - are the apps available likely to appeal to a couple of boys, aged 11 and 13? I am tight fisted with them as well, so are the free apps in particular "boy friendly"? Am hovering towards the basic £129 version, mainly because it will be used more for games and browsing rather than streaming - am I thinking on the right lines, or is it not worth it for the sake of £30?

There is nowhere on Amazon UK to browse the apps (only on the actual Kindle Fire), but if you go to Amazon.com, I believe most of the apps on there are available here. Having had a quick look in my app store, there seems to be loads of games for children/young boys. There is a free app every day, usually worth about £3-5. Sometimes it's a children's game, sometimes something more adult.

I have the Kindle Fire HD. I try to get the best I can afford as it tends to work out better in the long run.

yes, there looks to be plenty there to keep them amused. Son #1 was adamant that we should get a nexus, but I think he can be persuaded.

I would really consider the Nexus - it is a Kindle Fire + - I have the Amazon store (free apps and all) set up on mine, so I get the Kindle Fire, *PLUS* all the nice Google stuff from having the latest version of Android.
