Permanently saving your Kindle books DRM-free

This post was last modified: 24 Oct 2012 06:18 PM by leep.
After the story of Linn Nygaard having all her books deleted by Amazon, there's been a few articles posted on how to copy them off your Kindle, remove the DRM (so you can use them on other devices) and store them where Amazon can't arbitrarily destroy them.

One guide is by Zachary West (it talks about Macs but the same process works for Windows apparently)

The other is from Lifehacker (similar instructions though it does talk about both Macs and Windows machines)

Useful if you're feeling particular Orwellian.

Note: this is a violation of Amazon's terms of service

RE: Permanently saving your Kindle books DRM-free

Interesting topic and worrying judging by the attitude of Amazon.

If I bought a paperback book from Amazon, I would be extremely surprised if they knocked on my door after 6 months to ask for it back because I violated some terms and conditions. Yet they overcharge for electronic copies and then use their T&Cs as an excuse for taking away what you've paid for.

There was a story going around about Bruce Willis apparently suing Apple because under their T&Cs when he dies his iTunes music collection dies with him and cannot be passed on to his family. This never happens with vinyl or CD.

These large Goliaths have got it all worked out. Google, Apple and Amazon are all guilty of this behaviour.

The Bruce Willis story isn't true.
Amazon removing content from your Kindle for breaking their terms and conditions is also untrue.

It is true that they can put a hold on your account stopping you getting access to titles you've bought and haven't either downloaded onto your computer or onto your Kindle. However, as long as you downloaded it when you bought it, they can't/won't remove it from your Kindle*.

If you are uncomfortable with removing DRM from your e-books, then don't do so. You can still download a copy of the books you buy onto your computer and keep them as a back-up. I personally remove the DRM so that I know that I will be able to read the books I've bought on any e-reader and not just the one I currently own.

*Technically they can, but after mistakenly selling copies of 1984 that they shouldn't have, they refunded people and removed the book from their Kindles when they next connected to the Amazon servers - but later apologised and said they shouldn't have done so and wouldn't ever do again in future.

I'm also worried by this. How do I remove the DRM from the books I've bought legally from Amazon? I have many books obtained from other sources which I know are DRM free anyway.

I strongly dislike DRM on e-books. It should not be the case that we buy just a license when we buy an e-book, but that we buy a product just as if we were buying a DTB. Especially given that we definitely don't pay 'lease' prices. I don't buy DRM'd music and try to buy DRM free books where I can (publishers like Baen and Tor) but Amazon is the only place I can get some books.

(Quaser if you follow the links in the first post the methods for backing up content are there)
