Permanently saving your Kindle books DRM-free

After the story of Linn Nygaard having all her books deleted by Amazon, there's been a few articles posted on how to copy them off your Kindle, remove the DRM (so you can use them on other devices) and store them where Amazon can't arbitrarily destroy them.One guide is by Zachary West (it talks about Macs but the same process works for Windows apparently)
The other is from Lifehacker (similar instructions though it does talk about both Macs and Windows machines)
Useful if you're feeling particular Orwellian.
