Tony, Roger is not usually here, but his agent/publisher (?) is and she alerted Roger to the discussion.

Hi Everyone,

!

And, Happy Reader, I don’t think you missed the point because, to a degree, I left it a bit open to allow the reader to draw their own conclusion. However, if you revisit the first sentence of the epilogue, that might provide a clue as to what my own view of which the real ending is.

Thank you Roger, I have just checked the epilogue, Very clever. Wink

Other members will know that other authors here have had some difficult reviews from me. I just did not think this worked at all well.

Banal cliched writing. Unimaginative and lacks empathy with the characters. They remain as wooden as the murderer’s carvings and could as well be called Victim #1 etc. Slightly better when it changes from a rather unpleasant slasher horror story to a police procedural, but with not that much to redeem the lazy tics and tropes of the genre. Impossibly the police forget to search the suspect’s premises and 2 cops are killed as a result, a clanger that goes unnoticed by either “the brass” or the interfering and stupid press. An attempt to blend Stephen King and Ian Rankin with all the scariness of a pair of wet socks and the intelligence of a wooden gnome.

You may indeed wonder why I stayed with it. It was only to find out how the author squared the gritty world of a serial murder investigation and the (oddly) slightly whimsical horror/fantasy tale of a family of murderous carvings come to life. Basically it boiled down to WDC Baggot saying that she agreed with Tompkins version that she had indeed been gnomed to near death, despite Tompkins’ efforts to protect her. The force shrink explains this as Tompkins “thought transference”, which all accept and live happily ever after . OMG Omg ! If as Roger has just suggested it was "Tompkins' nightmare", then it's all a lot of effort for not very much.

Tony

I’m not doing very well here, am I Blush

I will just pick you up on one point though, Tony – the police didn’t forget, they made an assumption based on what they’d just been told by the landlord, but left two officer’s on watch, ‘just in case’. Hogg later punished himself for ‘a very stupid assumption’. It's called making a mistake, something I do regularly.

Regarding the rest, I respect your opinion.

What I Read

RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of The Cupboard Under The Stairs (contains spoilers)

A few people have mentioned "clunky writing" and that the story had holes and an unsatisfactory ending, yet I'd posted at midnight that I just had to go to bed, then I finished the rest off as I wanted to keep going.
I'm not saying it's marvellously written fiction, just that I was glued to my kindle screen and turning that page again and again.
I like that there are different tastes on this site.
I must admit I was shouting at the police "go and break in" But Hogg realised, but not quite in time.
Like most detective stories, ff they'd solved the clue at the first instance, the book would be a rather short one.
Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

I'm still here Susanne, lurking in the background lol

It is interesting though to read all the different viewpoints on this book though, as to be fair every reader has his/her own expectations of a book plus we all like different genres....

me too, I was screaming "just go and break the bloody door down!!!!" at the kindle!

I liked the story, and the fact that it had alternate endings, which kept me puzzling for a day or so afterwards trying to suss it out. For some reason, it reminded me of those old TV shows that used to come on - Tales of the Unexpected. Nobody would ever say that they were "classic TV" or deserving of any major cultural awards, but we all used to watch and love them every week.

Thanks Joo & Elaine. I do totally accept that TCUTS isn’t a literary masterpiece, or even close, but I had hoped that it would be entertaining to over eighteens who like ‘dark stuff’. I’m guessing that that’s how you both saw it, and assuming that my guess is a good one, I thank you, and very much appreciate your input.

Don't do yourself down too much Roger! It is an entertaining read after all.

RE: Bookclub: The Discussion of The Cupboard Under The Stairs (contains spoilers)

This is the first book I've read from this author, and although a 'lurker' for quite a while here......my first review. (I'm a very slow reader!)

An 'easy' read. I didn't find it particularly gory like other readers. Probably says more about me than the book, though!

I felt very sad for Harry, wanting a just outcome for him.

The ending?....Mmmm..... Personally, I would've been happy with the thought that Bug took over the World. The Prologue, I felt, was a rather unsatisfactory addition, adding nothing to the story. In fact quite the reverse.

But overall, a good read for me.

Thanks for that, Squaredog. The purpose of the prologue was to leave the reader to reach his/her own conclusions, but with a clue in the first line to confirm my own intention. Sorry that approach didn’t work well for you, but delighted that, overall, it was a good read for you. Smile
