Kindle at Waterstones (advantages to all kindle owners)

Hi there.
Some of you may know about Waterstones plans to sell Kindles and Kindle Fires from 25th October.
However you may not know the benefits to buying or entering the store with your kindle.

Firstly ALL stores will have free wi-fi access so you can download to your hearts content. The important part of this service is that if you download a book to your kindle whilst using Waterstones wi-fi, you are supporting your local bookstore AND Amazon. Win-win. Without bookshops, e-books would simply increase in price.
Additionally anyone using a kindle in store will have the option to read for one hour a day 100% free. This goes further than the usual sample, you could read any part of any ebook for up to an hour a day.

New kindle owners - if you purchase a kindle at Waterstones you will have the ability to download 3 recent releases free (selected titles but good ones)

Waterstones will be stocking the Kindle Fires also an the same benefits apply (free wi fi, supporting bookstores etc)

Finally there will be Kindle specialists in store to help with any problems or questions you have.

By now you may be wondering 'god does this guy work for them or something?' Well yes I do and I don't want to see another bookstore leave the high street and I don't think you guys do either.

So next time you pass a Waterstones and you want to read for free or you were maybe thinking about buying a kindle book when you get home, why not sit down with a coffee, open your kindle and support what we all love to do whether we are a shop or a website.....read!

What I would like to know is, will you be able to buy kindle books from WaterStones website and get points on the card?

I was just thinking of another service that Waterstones can offer, it might take some work to do. Instead of having to use the kindle or the internet at home to order a new book for the kindle, you can go into a Waterstones store and pay for it by cash. And Waterstones automatically send it to the kindle. That way for people who is not internet/computer whizz can use the kindle without too much problems or worrying about security.

The only points that you get is if you buy an actual kindle or accessory in store (not on ebooks).
Kindle books will be available on the w.com website early next year and will be beneficial for both Waterstones and amazon.
Good idea with buying over counter but doubt it'll happen.

I am seriously impressed by the sound of this - embracing the e-books business model head-on; rather than putting your fingers in your ears and shouting as loudly as you can, which is pretty much how record shops responded to MP3.

What about those of us who read Kindle books, but on an iPad (or similar)? Are we accounted for by this initiative? (I hope so!)

I do have to take issue with one small point though:

Firstly about iPads and various Kindle apps. Of course you can use the wi-fi for these devices or to download books. All I can say is that only by downloading ebooks direct from a kindle device does the store benefit. However our main aim is to simply allow Kindle users to use the device in store however they wish to.

Concerning the price increase question, my theory is simply this....Gas companies increase prices cause you need gas, petrol prices as you need petrol. No bookshops leaves Amazon with no competition therefore any business realises that they could charge whatever they want. A competitive market enables competitive prices.

Rant over! Haha

Ps. Lou, def will pm and discuss, perhaps a dedicated thread or something. We seriously will be the best face in the high street for kindle

There is plenty of ebook competition out there, Google play is just one.
Apart from that, it is good that Waterstones are adapting.

Weren't Waterstones and Amazon partners not so long ago? I remember buying a fairly rare hardback, that Amazon didn't sell, but came from Waterstones via Amazon.

This actually sounds pretty good. I look forward to a future where ebooks and traditional bookstores can co-exist in harmony, without one gobbling up the other; sounds like this is a measured and sensible step towards that goal.

I don't think these examples are comparable: (a) People don't "need" books in the way they "need" petrol. (In economic jargon, the price of petrol is more 'inelastic'.) (b) The global oil and gas industries clearly are running a cartel, but Amazon don't have their political connections, so if they *did* do this, the various monopolies regulators would be down on them very quickly.

Besides, if Waterstones are in bed with Amazon, they are hardly doing much to increase competition are they? Wink

I think this is a brilliant initiative for Waterstones, it will bring e-books to those who were either afraid of the technology or don't have wi-fi access at home for some reason.

Do you know ajyates33, are Waterstones going to be selling the Amazon gift cards as well, so you have no need to put your credit card details online at all, as I know this puts some people off of the whole e-books scenario?

Only happy when I am immersed in a good Kindle book Thumbs Up
