Making the move from epub to kindle if poss how?

My mum seriously is looking into getting a kindle Paperwhite or taking my soon old kindle touch 3g off my hands but here is the clear problem she has an epub ereading device she got some years ago and has many paid books on it and doesn’t see why she should have to own 2 eBook devices... discuss? I assume kindle Paperwhite doesn’t support epub and as far as I know my touch 3g doesn’t?

PS if it is allow here assuming I pre ordered a Paperwhite from the UK what would anyone pay for a kindle touch 3g only a few weeks old (had a replacement) and a replaced official light up leather cover with a few marks?

What is the epub reader? Where did she buy the books?

This is the big problem with ereaders and to be honest is down to Amazon wanting to control their share of the market by having their own file format for ebooks (Apple do it too, and to an extent Barnes & Noble). For that reason, just getting another epub reader is the easiest option. Because it uses Adobe DRM that is linked to the user and not the device, you mum could easily buy another epub ereader (Sony T1, Kobo Touch/Glo, etc) and read her books on it (as long as she registers the new ereader with her existing Adobe ID). So for example, trying the Kobo Glo could be an option instead of the Paperwhite?

However, if you are willing to bend the rules slightly and put in a little effort, you can fairly easily learn how to remove the DRM from the ebooks. Then it's just a simple matter of using a free programme like Calibre to convert them to/from the different formats so you can read the ebooks on whatever device you want. Not everyone will agree with doing this though, it's up to you as an individual.

As for the price of a Kindle Touch 3G, I'm not sure but have a look at the auction prices for them on ebay and see what they sell for (a few sitting at £50+ with a couple of days still left on the bidding).

It is an Elonex. Some small site called books on board. I know their epub. Hate to say it but I’m sure it had something to do with adobe sounds like DRM if so. Update: Site does say publishers have a right to enforce DRM if they choose so.

In theroy if i was to bend and not saying I am going to of course, would the formatting of the books be okay do you think? Thinking of giving my mum my old kindle touch 3g once I get my Paperwhite 3g I just ordederd. Yep hell of a problem. They are I think adobe ebooks but the device isnt internet connected so no account to speak of. Sure she uses adobe digital editions to read books on the PC but she logs into the book site to download.

Yes... in theory!!

(And although this is technically illegal, it is no different from ripping a CD to MP3 (also technically illegal in the UK) and as long as it is for personal use only, I (a) can't see any moral problem with it; (b) think it is vanishingly unlikely that there would be any 'consequences'.)

Fully agree with what J.S.Egan has just posted, for books you've bought for your own use, I don't see why not. I've bought some books from Books on Board because it was cheaper than Amazon, and converted them to read on my Kindle. I have only read one of them so far though, but the formatting of it was fine.

Generally speaking, unless you have bought a book that is specifically DRM free (and most aren't), if it's an epub (bought from places like Books on Board, Kobo/WH Smith, Google Play, Waterstones etc) then it will be an Adobe DRM epub. And although you download the book from the shop you bought it from, the file you download onto your PC is often an .ascm file which opens in Adobe Digital Editions and that in turn gives you the actual .epub file that you can then put onto your ereader.
