Bezos says Kindles sold at cost and launches UK lending

They don't really specify the date for the lending. As already noted, the article also mentions the Paperwhite will launch in Europe starting 25th October.

Seems like Amazon is finally letting the UK catch up with the US. I think with the uptake of Kindles in this country over the last couple of years the UK has proved a very solid market for ebooks, and it should only get better. Maybe the next generation on Kindles will get a simultaneous release for both USA and UK.

Coming later this month - Kindle Owners' Lending Library - with an Amazon Prime membership, Kindle owners can choose from more than 200,000 books to borrow for free with no due dates, including current and former top sellers in the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store and all 7 Harry Potter books.

Also interesting that he confirmed they don't make money on the hardware:

That basically rules out any competition on price for companies who don't have their own content store.

Did I read that you have to have an Amazon Prime subscription to get the lending? so £50 to borrow some books (as well as delivery blah,blah).

Yeah, I guess it's a perk aimed mainly at current prime members and wavering ones (I've seen posts saying people aren't getting their deliveries any quicker with prime than without).

I would love to borrow books, but the rest of Prime has little use for me, we just don't order enough and usually use super saver any way (it's rare I *need* something quickly). Maybe they'll improve the whole Prime package in the near future, or make it so you can pay a smaller sub for just borrowing books.

Also 1 a month?! What a low number!

In the US the Prime subscribers get access to their on-demand movie service too, so far no Lovefilm for Prime subscribers here though (might change with the Fire HD being launched).

I'm signed up for Prime and have found it great for always getting free next day (99% of the time) delivery on anything Amazon fulfils.
