Nice spot. That was a lot quicker than expected!

Pity I'm reading a lot of people having problems with the screens, so I'm not quite so tempted to buy one...

RE: Paperwhite now available to the UK!

I noticed tonight and pre-order a wifi only model from Amazon UK. As Amazon are good at replacing dud units I'm secure in the knowledge if I get a duff unit with any of the screen problems I will get a replacement easily enough.

I was nervous when I ordered my Nexus 7 as well because of the reports of the screen problems the first batch had but it seemed that bad units were returned and you didn't hear of any problems with the screens from the second run onwards.

Also the more units out there the more chances, statistically speaking, of duff units getting through QC. I think from the reviews I've seen, bolstered by the video reviews on YouTube, that there could've been a batch of bad screen slipping into the supply chain but hopefully now that Amazon know to look for it the chances of a lot of them getting through now is limited. There are too many reviews, video and otherwise, without these screen problems for it to be present in every Kindle PaperWhite.

But you take the chances with anything you buy, Amazon has a good return, refund or replacement policy which helps overcome any worries about possibly being unlucky enough to get a duff PW.

I really want a new updated Kindle, I bought a Kindle Touch and it just wasn't for me, I found it difficult to use. As I use my Mum's Kobo Touch all the time when I add books etc., for her I know the problems I have with the KT are the device. I gave my Mum a borrow of it and she had the same difficulties and problems with it I did. Not a duff unit let me point out just the way it worked. I was forever launching books I didn't want to launch instead of flipping pages as intended as well as having problems with flipping pages inside books. Not that the touchscreen was faulty just I couldn't comfortably use it and ended up going back to my KK.

RE: Paperwhite now available to the UK!

Shocked I looked at Amazon 40mins ago and there was nothing on there about the PW, then my OH was on the bbc and said he was reading an article saying it was available for pre-order

I was expecting them to launch it over here in January at the earliest and I was trying (ha!) to be patient till then. I sold my K3 last week and have been sharing my partner's since then, but it has cracks in the surround as he never used a case like I did (mine was in near perfect condition thanks to a sturdy but waay too bulky case).

I've been wanting to order a PW as I've never liked the keyboard on my K3 and mostly read at night. I didn't fancy importing one with the problems some people are facing with the screens (coloured patches and clouds, chequerboard type shading several inches up the screen from the bottom), not to mention having to pay a lot more on top. Getting one with a bad screen and having to send it back to the US? eek! (though I've been reading good things about Amazon CS in regards to the issues)

Oddly enough, if you order now you'll get a PW before people in America who also order one today as there's a 4 to 6 week backlog over there Confused

Really looking forward to my new shiny kindle! Clapping hands

I originally ordered mine from the states, and it had an estimated shipping date of October 17th. Tonight when I got home, I did some calculations on costs and it turned out it was only a few more pounds cheaper to cancel the states one and wait a couple of more days to get the cheaper option. And I hope to get it about 25th Oct.

Do these fit into the same cases as the touch?

I would think they'd fit quite nicely, but not in the moulded style ones. It's a tiny bit smaller than the touch and a tiny bit bigger than the standard Wi-Fi. Mine squeezes into my old Wi-Fi case perfectly.

I'm glad I won't have to pay £49 for a lighted case on this one.

Does the interface have the 'tile style' book cover display? I was annoyed I couldn't get it on the touch last time after the picture on Amazon showed it with it.
