Search dictionary

Hi,

A brand new "newbie", so sorry in advance for what may well be a series of "doh" questions!

I have just opened the Kindle that is a Christmas present to my wife. I thought I'd better learn the basics before she opens it in a few days time.

My initial question is; I have set the default dictionary to the british edition and I have tried to search the dictionary. Using both highlighting the "search dictionary" at the footer of the dictionary page and also via the "search this book" in the menu option, neither give me an option of typing in a word I want to search for.

I am probably missing something very basic, but I can't figure out what it is. Can anyone help please?

What I Read

RE: Search dictionary

Hi there,
It is pretty simple when you know how - like most things! When you open the dictionary, a long lozenge box is at the bottom. Simply type in the word you want to search for - it will start to show possible words. You can either press the up button of the four way button (sorry - not sure of exact name!) and choose the word you want by highlighting and pressing the centre buttons, or when you have finished typing the word in the box, press the right on the 4 way button, then the centre of it, and the word you want should come up. You can then move through the dictionary using the page up and down buttons too.
Hope that helps and didn't confuse you more than necessary!
And resign yourself to the fact that your wife may not speak to you for several weeks as she will be so engrossed in her new kindle!!!

What I Read

RE: Search dictionary

Hi and welcome John

If you want to use the dictionary while reading a book:

1) just click the down arrow on your 5-way controller button (big square controller just above back button)

2) you will now see a cursor line and you need to use the 5-way controller to position it just in front of a word you wish to look up in the dictionary

3) You will get a brief dictionary definition at the top or bottom of the screen

4) if you want a full definition, just press the return arrow under the DEL button then press the BACK button when you've finished to go back to where you were reading
