new Kindle Touch

Hi all,

I've got a 2nd gen kindle and decided to upgrade to the latest and greatest Kindle Touch. Was just about to make the purchase on Amazon UK when I noticed on the wikipedia article that Amazon annouced a new Kindle Touch (5th generation I believe). I've tried to find it on Amazon Uk site but it looks like it has not been released yet.

I've read that the Paperwhite is not going to be released in the UK in the foreseeable future, but does this also apply to the brand new Kindle Touch?

Thanks!

I've not heard anything about a 5th gen Kindle Touch but perhaps the article was confusing it for the Kindle Paperwhite which is also touch screen.

RE: new Kindle Touch

Interesting... here is what the Wikipedia says:

"Amazon announced a new version of the regular Kindle on September 6, 2012. It starts off at $69 for an ad-supported version and $89 ad-free version. The new Kindle has a black case, better contrast, and hand-tuned fonts. It is claimed to have 15% faster page loads. It has 167 PPI pixel density and is the lightest Kindle at 5.98 oz (170g)."

Am I mixing up the Touch with the 'regular' one?

this: http://www.amazon.co.uk...

If so, how can I tell if this is the ad-supported one?

Yes, the one in your link is a 5th gen Kindle, regular one. It's not a touch screen however, just an updated version of the older Kindle Wi-Fi.

None of the UK Kindles are ad-supported, so there would be no ads on this model.

Aaaaaaah, ok cool.

so i notice that the regular kindle has a black case (as described in the wiki article) but the touch has a grey case. are they both the 5th gen ones that were announced on September 6, 2012?

No, the Kindle Touch is still a 4th gen, the only 5th gen is the black one. If you really want a touch one, I would recommend importing a Kindle Paperwhite as it is the best Kindle eReader by a hundred miles.

RE: new Kindle Touch

I thought that they'd redesigned the touch screen so it was less sensitive to accidental touch?

RE: new Kindle Touch

thanks. i did consider the paperwhite, but not really sure i need the touch screen version of a kindle - unless it really is a much better device...!

i imagine that the 5th gen touch won't be out officially over here for a few months still, so maybe i'll get the normal kindle as i don't suppose there really is that much of an advantage with a touch (apart from battery life). it is also marginally smaller than the touch.

on a side note, the specification of the 5th gen normal and the 4th gen touch are pretty much identical so i wonder if it is even worth waiting for a 5th gen touch, thoughts on that?

Thinking of them as 4th or 5th generation just makes things confusing.

Currently in the UK there are 3 different Kindles available.

Kindle Keyboard (aka Kindle 3)
Kindle (aka Kindle 4 or Kindle NT)
Kindle Touch

The Kindle 4 has been given a makeover and now has a black casing instead of the original grey, but apart from being £20 cheaper, it's no different from the grey one. The two versions both run exactly the same firmware.

The Kindle Touch is still on sale in the UK, but it will soon be replaced by the newly launched (in the USA only so far) Kindle Paperwhite. As well as increased screen resolution and inbuilt light, it has a capacitive touch screen instead of the infra-red touch screen that the Kindle Touch uses.

RE: new Kindle Touch

Thanks for clearing that up. My mistake for assuming that a new generation replaced all models in the range.

One thing you mention though is that the paperwhite will be out in the UK soon, but as far as i can tell Amazon have said that there are currently no plans for a UK release...
