RE: 10 reasons NOT to buy a book

I voted for most of those things!

I wasn't sure what you meant by 'forum buzz', but one other reason I have for not buying a book is having 'met' an author on a forum (not this one I hasten to add) and finding their attitude annoying in the extreme. Rude, arrogant people get put on my mental list of 'don't reads'. They might be brilliant authors but...

I think it's understandable. Just like wham-bam posts. Though itf the work is free I might download to see what the fuss is about.

I also feel peevish over permafres which sit above ours when we do promos, but I think that's just envy!

RE: 10 reasons NOT to buy a book

I feel really negative in answering this one as I can apply most of them to why I wouldn't buy a book. I think any one of them could potentially stop me buying something, but I try to look at books with an open mind now. At one time I would only have chosen a book if I knew something about the author or book, but thanks to the wonderful world of Kindle and our brilliant indie authors I have a much more open mind and will try other authors or genres now.

I totally agree about price as well, there is no way I would pay the price that some authors or rather their publishers ask, just because they are famous and think they deserve more.
Only happy when I am immersed in a good Kindle book Thumbs Up

RE: 10 reasons NOT to buy a book

Someone posted a freebie today on the 'zoo list. The name sounded interesting as it had in brackets (Crime, legal thriller (mystery, legal)).

I didn't stop at the first "reasons not to buy it" but carried on.
1 - didn't like cover
2 - In description it starts with a review, except it is not just a review, it is a glowing "this author is fab" review
3 - Then it goes onto one liner reviews -

I'm now wondering what the book is about as I still don't know. I'll give it a chance and proceed a bit further (in the interest of this thread Big Grin)
I did find the description. Looks OK but didn't grab me.

So did I buy it or not? I didn't

Because I already bought it last January Confused Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

RE: 10 reasons NOT to buy a book

i think i would like to expand on price a little here...

if a particular book is within my usual price range and i quite fancy it then, especially if it is a part of a series, i will often check out the prices of the rest of the author's books... a lot of the time, authors offer a cheap book and then the rest of their books are way out of my price range... so my point is that it isn't just the price of the book in question that i look at, but the average price of ALL that author's work that i would consider before purchasing...

Genre first of all- i don't read sci-fi, or fantasy.

Price second- i really resent paying more for an eBook than a hardback.

But, if a books free, and it has good reviews i will have a read (which is more a reason why to read a book than why not!)

RE: 10 reasons NOT to buy a book

Hello,

One of the first things I notice when buying a book by an author I don't know is the cover. If the cover attracts me, I'll pick it up and read the blurb. If the blurb doesn't grab me I put it back. If it does get me I read the opening paragraph. If that's great, I'll read on - usually by the end of the first or maybe second page I know I'm into it or not. This is how I choose and don't choose books.

1. Cover
2. Blurb
3. Opening

Obviously, genre is key too because I tend to read within a certain genre. Price isn't as important, but obviously if it's cheaper the better!

I don't know if this says more about me or more about marketing. Either way, it works.

Cheers,

Jon

I just thought I'd bump this then give it a few days before doing a little analysis of the results. I also think it would be interesting to compare findings with the poll Ken Magee ran a while back on reasons to buy a book.
