lost books

hi folks,
can anybody help,
I seem to have lost all the books from my kindle 2.
story so far:
was cutting and pasting from pc to kindle connected by usb,
disconnected kindle pressed home and it only appeared with the oxford dictionary and 98 archived items, some of which were on my kindle in my collections,
i reconnected to pc via usb and opened docs folder and all my books are there.
but will not show on the home screen of kindle.
how can I recover my collections
there appears to be a music folder missing from files screen on kindle
can somebody let me know what are the default files on a kindle 2 so i can check if more are missing.
cheers sooty

RE: lost books

I would first fully charge up the Kindle. Then try connecting the WiFi and sync with the Amazon servers, if no change, reset the Kindle (move and hold the power switch for 20 seconds before releasing it, then wait for it to reboot). If your books don't show up after that, connect via USB and try deleting them all. Then just copy a couple of books back into the docs folder of your Kindle, disconnect it (remember to safely eject from PC), and see if they appear. Try the sync with Amazon and reboot again if not.

If none of that works, you could try a reset to factory defaults (which I think will be the same as the Kindle 3, Menu > Settings > Reset to factory default).

Sorry, don't know what the default folders are on the Kindle 2.

RE: lost books

well thank you for the advice,
I downloaded that calibre thing and tried to load some books and they loaded nae problem, into a folder which was recreated called documents.
One thing I forgot to say yesterday was that I renamed the documents folder so the wife would know where to put her books. so would renaming the folder from documents have been the prob.
as since it has created the docs folder all the caliber books go in no probs.
but it seems that my 98 books are now in my archive and i dont want to download them one at a time is there a solution to this

RE: lost books

Yep I think you've identified the problem, don't rename any of the folders on your Kindle!

This is important with Calibre too, don't rename any of the folders in your Calibre directory, it doesn't like that either.

If you still have the 98 books on your Kindle in the folder you renamed, then what I'd do is delete the new folder with the books you loaded using Calibre, and rename your original folder to the correct name (documents). The books should then appear on your Kindle ok. That saves you having to reload any of them.

If you've already deleted that folder and no longer have the books anywhere but in your archive, you can go to the Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon and re-download them from there. It still involves clicking through each book but won't be as time consuming as doing it via your Kindle.

If you do have to re-download them this way, and you want to send them all at the one time, remember to plug your Kindle in while the books are being delivered wirelessly, and leave it plugged in for a while to give it time to index them.
