99p PROMO 18th-25th JUNE: Heretic Queen by Susan Ronald - Elizabeth I and Religion

Elizabeth I is often hailed as Britain's greatest Queen, both for her achivements during her reign, and for the legacy she left.

But her role in setting her country on a new religious path, and re-casting the faith of Europe, has been overlooked.

In this major new biographical study, acclaimed Elizabthean historian Susan Ronald tells the story of Elizabeth the religious leader. She sets the Elizabethan age within the context of the bitter Catholic-Protestant wars that raged across Europe throughout the latter half of the 16th century.

And she recounts how Elizabeth was shaped by the religious divisions that marked the reigns of her infamous father, Henry VIII, as well as her Protestant brother, Edward VI, and her Roman Catholic sister, Mary I -- so much so that upon her ascension to the throne in 1558 she was determined to grant a measure of religious tolerance to her subjects. She was a ruler who was both forward-looking, yet conscious of history.

But as she and her advisers hammered out what became known as the Elizabethan religious settlement, they had to battle with rivals from beyond England’s borders - and from inside the country as well.

For Elizabeth, defending her faith soon became the same as defending her realm - and if one wavered, so would the other.

Ronald brilliantly pulls together a vast amount of historical research into a compelling, original narrative that is essential reading for anyone interested in the Elizabethan era.

'Heretic Queen' has been praised by many leading historians.

'A timely triumph in an age when religion continues to be a matter of conflict'
(Lady Antonia Fraser)

'A searing account of the dark underside of the Elizabethan golden age. Susan Ronald has written a devastating and important reminder of the long, hard road from religious strife to accommodation.' (Amanda Foreman)

'This is compulsive, engaging and vivid history, and a long-overdue study of the religious settlement of Elizabeth I's reign, packed with eyewitness detail. Susan Ronald has the gift of making us feel we are there, caught up in the crises of faith that affected Elizabeth's subjects. In her capable hands, the drama of the English Reformation comes alive.' (Alison Weir)

SUSAN RONALD was born and raised in the United States but has lived in England for more than twenty-five years. She is the author of The Pirate Queen, The Sancy Blood Diamond and France: The Crossroads of Europe. She co-owns a film production company with her husband and is a screenwriter and film producer. 99p PROMO 18th-25th JUNE: How to Trade in Stocks by Jesse Livermore

Jesse Livermore was the greatest trader who ever lived.

He started trading at the age of fourteen.

He made his first fortune in the market panic of 1907 when he sold the markets short.

Over the years that followed, he built up a vast fortune trading in and out of the market right through the First World War and the 1920s.

Like every trader, he lost money as well as making it.

But over time, he always came out ahead.

His ability to time his trades was uncanny,

And his success funded a flamboyant lifestyle.

He owned a series of mansions around the world and married a Ziegfield follies showgirl. He was a the original rock-star trader, far more successful than any of today's hedge fund billionaires. Livermore even shorted the market before the 1929 crash - and came out even richer.

But what was the secret of his incredible success?

Shortly before he took his own life in 1940, Livermore wrote 'How To Trade In Stocks'.

The book distilled the wisdom of a lifetime of making - and sometimes losing - money.

In a terse, no nonsense style, he set our the rules of successful investing - rules that anyone with money in the markets can learn from.

The book mixes fascinating autobiographical and historical details with step-by-step guidance on:

Reading the market
Analyzing leading sectors
Timing your trades
Money management
Maintaining emotional control

It is the one book on investment that everyone should read.

This e-book edition includes an introduction by Martin Vander Weyer, city columnist for The Spectator.

99p PROMO 18th-25th JUNE: Pearl Habour: Hinge of War by Richard Freeman

Just over seventy years ago the world witnessed one of the most audacious and villainous surprise attacks in history. While Tokyo and Washington talked peace, hundreds of Japanese war planes descended on the Sunday morning calm of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. In less than 90 minutes four battleships were sunk, four more badly damaged and hundreds of American warplanes lay burnt out in tangled heaps on the runways.

The events leading up to the attack are a heady tale. In Hawaii the Japanese spy Yoshikawa kept Tokyo informed of the weaknesses in the harbour’s defences. In Japan the Foreign Office plotted deception after deception to disguise their iniquitous war plans. In Washington the Japanese ambassador talked peace and goodwill while his country armed itself for war.

In America the code-breakers read all the Japanese despatches and passed warning after warning to their masters. Day by day the signs of an imminent and sudden attack grew. But both in Washington and in Hawaii politicians and service chiefs failed to read the signs.

The story of the raid is one of Japanese military skill meeting American courage. As airfields and ships were attacked, as planes caught fire and ships capsized, the men of the army and navy heroically fought to save the planes, the ships and their compatriots. ‘Pearl Harbor: Hinge of War’ is packed with tales of heroism, valour and lucky escapes as ships became towering infernos and airfields were turned into bonfires of exploding planes. Its pages are filled with the stories of many of the survivors from the moment they first heard the throb of an aeroplane engine in the early morning calm to the departure of the last Japanese plane 90 minutes later.

The book ends with a look at the raid’s consequences and shows how what seemed a brilliant master-stroke by Japan proved to be their undoing: they had woken the sleeping giant.

Richard Freeman graduated in mathematics before following a career in distance education. He now writes on naval history. His other books include; 'The Great Edwardian Naval Feud', 'Britain's Greatest Naval Battle: The Armada, Trafalgar, Jutland' and 'A Close Run Thing: The Navy and the Falklands War'.

A Canturbury Crime, by Brian Kavanagh. Engaging murder mystery. FREE 19th/23rd

The ancient walled city of Canterbury has held many secrets over the centuries.

But none are more mysterious than the death of Professor de Gray.

When the amateur detective Belinda Lawrence is called in to evaluate the contents of the Professor's Tudor Manor House, she suspects foul play.

But why would anyone murder a harmless academic?

De Gray was about to publish a book that he promised would re-write the history of St Thomas Becket, who was murdered in the Cathedral in 1170.

Could that be a motive?

As she starts to investigate, Belinda uncovers an intricate web of secrets that leads to the killer - but which also threatens her life.

‘A Canterbury Crime’ is a brilliant re-invention of the classic English village murder mystery, following on from the best-selling 'Capable of Murder'.

Belinda Lawrence is a lively young heroine who pits her intellect against cold-blooded and ruthless killers - a character who is among the most memorable and engaging in modern detective fiction.

‘A Canterbury Crime' is perfect for fans of Peter James, Elizabeth George and Peter Robinson.

“A classy mystery that will keep you up half the night.” – Robert Foster, best-selling author of The Lunar Code.

“Mystery fiction at it’s very best.” – Tom Kasey, best-selling author of Trade Off.

The Jason Voyage: The Quest for the Golden Fleece, Tim Severin FREE 19th/23rd

Legend or fact?

Myth or reality?

In the thirteenth century BC, the Greek mythological hero Jason set sail in a galley with a band of Heroes in search of the Golden Fleece. The boat was named Argo, after its builder, and the sailors are known as the Argonauts.

But did they exist? And what was the Golden Fleece?

Their journey took them from present-day Greece, across the Aegean Sea, through the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara, through the much feared Bosphorus into the Black Sea, and then along the entire north coast of Turkey, ending up in the state of Georgia.

It was there, in ancient Colchis, that Jason found not only the Golden Fleece but also his bride, Medea, after taming the wild bulls, killing the serpent, and planting its teeth in the soil.

Or so the legend has it.

Tim Severin, having sailed in a leather boat from Ireland to America to test the legend of St Brendan, and having linked the seven journeys of Sindbad the Sailor into a single mammoth trip from Arabia to China, set out to investigate the story of Jason.

He had a twenty-oar galley built in the Aegean to the exact specifications of a Bronze Age boat and, with his crew of new Argonauts, made the same perilous 1500-mile journey. The oarsmen were aided by Greek, Turkish and Soviet volunteers as they passed through each country's territorial waters. And they underwent extraordinary hardships on the way.

But they did prove that, in spite of the dangers and discomfort, Jason could have made the journey in an oared galley, which many experts had considered impossible.

'The Jason Voyage' is the thrilling story of that journey.

It will have an irresistible appeal to scholars as well as lovers of adventure, travel and mystery.

Tim Severin's sailing books have been widely praised.

"Enthralling!" -The Guardian.

"An extraordinary explorer." - The Independent.

Tim Severin is an explorer, film-maker and lecturer, who has made many expeditions, from crossing the Atlantic in a medieval leather boat to going out in search of Moby Dick and Robinson Crusoe. He has written books about all of them. He has won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, the Book of the Sea Award, a Christopher Prize, and the literary medal of the Academie de la Marine. He also writes historical fiction.
