I personally think Apple are way too restrictive over how you can use the stuff you've bought (apple devices only). Fine if you have bought into the whole Apple eco-system type thing and have invested a lot of money there, but not so fine when there is so much choice available.
Obviously the Kindle Fire will centre around it's Amazon shop, but it niggled me a bit that they (supposedly) aren't allowing access to google play. While I will normally harp on how wonderful Amazon is, that bites a little. Also no GPS was the final decision maker for me.
Google/Asus Nexus 7 on the other hand has the GPS I so badly wanted, it has access to Google Play (and £15 free credit to start you off), and I can access the Amazon app store, no restrictions. Amazons free paid app of the day is a little hit and miss, but we have had a few.
No doubt there are other app stores around, but how many do you really need?
Battery life is a shocker after the Kindle, a few hours use and it needs a recharge, but it does depend how you use it.

RE: I pad vs kindle fire

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 which I use for everything, including reading on the Kindle app. When I was shopping for one, it was a toss up between the Nexus or the Galaxy. Both are pretty similar in spec and both would be comparable to a Kindle Fire moreso than an iPad.

I the clincher for me was that the Galaxy came in a 3G flavour (although £299 compared to £159 on Google or £199 in the shops for the Nexus) and I knew I would want to surf the net a lot away from my home wifi connection (work being one such place).

If you're not worried about the 3G, then I would suggest getting the Nexus over a Fire. Both are Android based, but the Nexus can do everything a Fire can do but isn't tied into the Amazon way of life.

The "voice-typing" on the Nexus 7 is excellent, if you can get over the embarrassment of talking to a slab of glass!

how does it cope with accents?

I don't believe I've got a Scottish accent but the iPad I own (latest Gen) makes a complete hash of everything I attempt to say but my Nexus 7 has no problems and around 99% of the time gets it spot on.

thanks I was wondering about that, because my windowsphone can't understand a word I say most of the time, and I don't (I think) have a particularly regional accent.

I just tried doing a Billy Connolly impression into it, and it worked fine... but that might say more about my Billy Connolly impression than it does about Scottish accents!

RE: I pad vs kindle fire

Hi, thanks for the information so far. One of the joys of owning a kindle is the effortless download; I order a book from amazon and seconds later it arrives as if by magic.

If I purchased a nexus 7, how does the downloading of a book from Amazon work? I know the answer is probably obvious to most of you, but I' ve got a couple of blind spots when it comes to 3g and the like.

There is currently a 3G option for Nexus 7, so you have to have WiFi access.

To buy a book, you just click on STORE and then hit "Buy"! (If you own more than one device, it will ask you which one you want it delivered to.)

I have the Kindle app on my Nexus, the books I have bought from Amazon are on that. I haven't bought any books from the Nexus, I tend to do that via my pc anyway.
