What I Read

The Murray of Letho series by Lexie Conyngham

I first came across mention of Lexie Conyngham on the official amazon forums (before it got so nasty that I stayed away!) She had just published a couple of books. As they were cheap I downloaded them on the off chance but was surprised at how good they are and about the quality of the writing! Since then Lexie has published two more books in the series so there are four of them at the mo. They are on offer this month at 77p each and I can really recommend them as a good read.

They are historical mysteries set in Georgian Scotland. They are very well written. Here is the review that I wrote for the first book in the series:-

"I downloaded this book on a whim because it was cheap. I wasn't expecting much but have been stunned by the quality of the writing. This is an author to watch, a real talent. This is a satisfying mystery set in early nineteenth century St Andrews, Scotland. I loved the author's turn of phrase; here are a couple of examples "..heavy jowls nestled in his high collar like a toad in mud. He swept through the crowd like a frigate through a fishing fleet..", and in describing the music at an evening reception "..a pair of violins unhappily married and fallen on bad times."

I really enjoyed reading this. There is plenty of mystery to exercise the mind, good characterisation, a well-constructed story and tragedy. I do hope that this author will soon make more of her books available on the kindle. "

The four book titles are:-

Death in a Scarlet Gown (Murray of Letho #1)
Knowledge of Sins Past (Murray of Letho #2)
Service of the Heir (Murray of Letho #3)
An Abandoned Woman (Murray of Letho #4)

All just 77p each for the month of October.

I'm about a quarter of the way into Service of the Heir and it is well up to her usual standard!

I've just finished the last book in the series (for now, I hope - really hope some more will follow!)

These books are so well-written, good characterisation, plenty of humour in the writing, very descriptive, plenty of mystery to keep you guessing, good period detail - what more can I say? Highly recommend this series.

The latest installment in the Murray of Letho series is available now at an introductory price of 77p. I've started reading it this morning, and it is well written as usual! I really do recommend this series, very well written historical mysteries.

These are superb. They remind me of Jane Austen - only in Scotland.
