RE: Locking Up

Which case do you have?
There was an issue with the non-lighted official Amazon cases. A fair few of us (who had the cases) had lock-up issues. Amazon, at the time, refunded the price of the cases and added a bit extra so we could upgrade to the case with the light included. This did solve the problem at the time.

If it is the official Amazon case with no light, then you could try using the Kindle without it.

Thanks for your help. It is the standard non-lighted case. I've spoken to Amazon and they have credited me the full amount (bought in Sep 2010) plus another £1 to cover the extra that the new non-lighted one (£30.99) costs. They don't want the old one back.

I wonder, if this is an electrical/contact problem, if there is any means of insulating the lugs from the device? Anyone tried?

Anyway thanks for your advice!

Yes, the two suggested solutions are either a light coating of nail varnish or some sellotape over the contacts.

I don't use mine in my cover very often, but haven't had any issues using the sellotape solution. In saying that, it was only the early non-lighted covers that had this issue, they were supposed to have done something to fix it, so I don't actually know whether mine would have been affected or not. I just used sellotape as a precaution as soon as I got the cover.

Thanks for the tip. I'm right out of nail varnish at the moment Wink but a quick trip to my neighbour should fix that. I'll treat the top lug first because that is the one that has a tiny portion of exposed bright metal on its tip. It should be necessary to only treat one lug, I guess. I'll report back here with the result in a week or two.

(One caveat regarding Amazon refunds; they will only refund to your original credit or debit card and if, like me, your card has expired or been discontinued, as mine was, you have a few hoops to jump through to get the refund in your mitts.)

RE: Locking Up

I don't know if this is the same problem - my Kindle was going really slowly, and frequently did a soft re-set.  I used the Calibre plugin for collections simply to save my collection information prior to carrying out a hard-reset (factory-reset).  Calibre give me a diagnostic that two different books were duplicated and Kindle had designated them with the same code number.  I deleted both duplicates and did a soft-reset and the problem was solved with no need to do the hard reset.  If you aren't using Calibre you really should get it.  It's available for all platforms - I use Ubuntu Linux, but it is available on all other operating systems including Microsoft.hardware

RE: Locking Up

Barry's post prompted me to remember that I had not reported back since my last post in January.  I'm pleased to confirm that I have not had a single lock-up/freeze since I treated the two lugs with (a neighbour's) clear nail varnish at that time.  Admittedly, I have not removed the Kindle from the cover but it is in use daily.

Looks like the answer; but I do have a modified version to use if things go permanently wrong in the future.
