Basic questions on behalf of a newbie

With just over 100 books now downloaded on my wife's new kindle, she asks a couple of questions as she has just begun reading. I suppose I should say, she has selected a random book half way through her list, that should she out of curiosity leave the page and explore the kindle options, via keys, how can she get back to the book she's reading ?

Also, she wondered if the re was any way of identifying how many pages there are in the book, once she has started reading it.

and finally, she has noticed that some free books, have very few pages, say 50 for example, so should she feel she wanted to leave her current reading book and read a short-paged one in bed, how would she know how which were the the short paged number books.

What I Read

RE: Basic questions on behalf of a newbie

The book you are currently reading will show at the top of each Collection (I assume your wife has set up Collections to categorise the different genres) or she can Show By Most Recent First on the Home Page. The book will open on the last page read.

Some books - but not all - now have page numbers, but you can only view them briefly. Usually the ones that are not indie published have page numbers. With the book in question open, click on the Menu and the page number will be displayed at the bottom of the page. Other than that, of course, you will see the percentage read at the bottom of the page.

As for short stories, why not have a Collection called Short Stories. But if you really want to know exactly how many pages, you would need to have a quick look at the Amazon page. So, with the book closed, but underlined by the cursor, click Menu/Book Description and that will take you to the book's Amazon page.

What I Read

RE: Basic questions on behalf of a newbie

Also when you look at a list of books (whether in a collection or not), you will see a row of dots. Basically that is the length of the book. That's about the best way to compare book lengths. The dots will be darker for the amount of it you have read.
If I was to leave a story, I make a bookmark (when I remember Big Grin). I'm always flitting about between books. That's the joy of a kindle, you should never lose your page.

Oh and don't be afraid to ask whatever questions you like, the only stupid question is the one un-asked Thumbs Up

RE: Basic questions on behalf of a newbie

Thank you to you both.

We haven't created a Collection as she only has Romance books.
Currently the book she is reading has no page numbers, and for whatever reason, probably us being novices, we lost her place. After finding the book in her Collection, she has clicked and gone through the book to arrive at the page where she left off.

She has now closed the kindle up so that it goes to sleep and eventually switches off, knowing that when she presses the power button, her page will be there ready.

Yes, we accept that if she does feel the low number page books are worth collecting, it might prove to be an idea to have a short story collection of it's own.

Oh, the dots under the title is worth knowing. We couldn't detect darker dots though.

We experimented and went to the Amazon page to get the details, that too is worth knowing.

Maybe you would tell us in detail how to make a book mark. Would this be used when flitting about from book to book?

By the time we have mastered it all, I will feel as though I too should have one.

I'd suggest at least 2 collections; "Currently Reading" and "Read Books" (or whatever names you prefer).

When you start a book move it to the first and, when you've read it, move it to the second. That way you can always find what you're reading and will be able to identify ones you've finished.

For bookmarking - on the kindle keyboard, you just press Alt B
I shall see if I can find a user manual for the K4 (I assume that's the one you have) It should be quite simple
