I solved the problem with a notebook by the bed and a pen with a light round the nib (don't know the word for the business end of a ballpoint). This means I can jot things down when it's dark without waking the good lady.

I've been in a couple of times and come away - in despair! So many which, though not badly written, aren't actually a story. I don't want to reject them but I can't make myself accept them. Don't know what to do.
