The Mr and I have birthdays close together. This year when he admitted to being out of ideas as to what to get me, I suggested we share a Cheetah Encounter at the zoo. It was fab. Heart

Sounds....scary! Tell us more. Smile

RE: Birthdays

Many years ago, I brought my first wife a shopping bag for her birthday. The divorce eventually arrived, but I'm taking better care when choosing presents for my current wife.

Good grief! That's the sort of activity that it's good to hear about long after the event - preferably when they've made it home in one piece.

Yes - unfortunately the wonder of Facebook means they can alarm you by posting what they're doing - as for instance my older son telling us blithely that he was staying at a dodgy-sounding place in Madrid called the 'Cats' Hostel' and then later that he was getting drunk with some people he'd met there and then that he'd woken up with a strange sandwich-box in his bed. (My work colleague has pointed out how much worse this could have been!) Incidentally he is nearly 33 and should know better.

I do wonder how old I have to be before my kids start worrying about me, rather than vice-versa.

Oh my goodness! Look at those teeth!

The cheetahs weren't at all scary. They're very bonded to their keepers, and they bound along on leads quite happily, sniffing out all the new and exciting smells. The encounter happens early in the day, before the zoo opens to the public, and the maximum group number (not counting keepers) is four. When the cheetahs were feeling mellow, we got to stroke them. They purr!

They're not at all aggressive (except to small children - no little ones allowed on this tour). One of the keepers realised the nervier of the two was a bit twitchy about my husband, who's very tall and has long hair, and was wearing a long brown coat. She asked him to tie his hair back, and Anubis (cheetah) was then much more relaxed. When they're nervous they press close to their keepers.

They're beautiful animals.
