Reviews for Firestone

Firestone had it's first review. It's a 4 star review so definitely off to a great start Smile

A lovely first book from a new fantasy author. A new twist on dragon/human lore which is fresh and thoroughly enjoyable. It has appeal to both young and old readers of fantasy novels. I picked this up and did not put it down for two days. Nicely paced with an ending that will want you begging for more.

RE: Reviews for Firestone

Not a review as such, but this turned up on Firestone's Facebook page earlier. Really made my day!

I'm not into fantasy books at all. I love horror books but I can't put Firestone down. It's a great book and I'll find myself reading it for hours on end! Not finished yet but loving it. Thanks!

RE: Reviews for Firestone

A review in progress....

I have someone currently reading my book on GoodReads and they are "blogging" about it as they progress through the book. It is really interesting what she is saying as she reads it. After her first comment, I thought "oh crap, here comes a bad review" but the book is working it's magic on her.....

13th Oct First impressions: this book employs one of the oldest and most well-worn fantasy themes in existence, the prophesied baby with the birthmark who miraculously survives a planned execution. I adore Willow, so this doesn't annoy me; it doesn't immediately impress me with the author's wealth of imagination either, though...

Fair enough, I wrote this book almost 10 years ago and was my first attempt at writing anything *oh the innocence!*

15th Oct So, I was skeptical for a few pages there, but then I turned on my "fireside storyteller" mode and decided to listen as if this was a dad telling a story to his kids. Hence, I'm finding this to not be a "great" book, but definitely a light and enjoyable one.

Light and fluffy, yes that's me!

17th Oct My Nook just died on me, but I want to point out, while I'm here, that I'm actually enjoying this book a lot. It's somewhat childish and shies determinedly away from detail of anything action-y, but it's really a cute, fun little book. I'm annoyed at having to put it down, since I was really starting to get into it...

She's about half way through now and I hope she continues to enjoy it!

RE: Reviews for Firestone

Well, it didn't take her long to finish the book!

Here is her full review....

4 Stars!

I recieved a free copy of this book from the author to read and review...and it looks like my review will be the first. I'm honored.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't know that it's a good book--there were some editing errors and more than a few confusing switching tenses, but it's definitely worth reading. There are some books like that--okay or not-so-great books that you just love. I came just shy of loving this one, because the whining of the whiny characters was too prominent and because I couldn't believe Toegan was actually as old as he claimed to be. I would have found his character much more effective if he had been, say, ten or twelve.

As I noted in one of my updates, this book is much easier to read if you don't think of it as a book. I had to go into fireside-mental-mode to really get a feel for it, which basically means that I pretended I was a little kid sitting by the author's armchair, watching the fire while he told me the story aloud. It made the random bits of information, the author's teasing, and the changing tenses much easier to accept.

Since I notice that my review seems to be dwelling on less than complimentary facts, I'm going to explain my four stars now. I gave it such a high rating because Firestone was fun. As long as I held onto my fireside-mode and was willing to suspend a great deal of disbelief, I enjoyed every page of it. This is a light, charming, sweet little book that I highly recommend to young children who are starving for dragons. I tend to prefer books that have a dark or a grim mood to them, but it's nice, sometimes, to find a book that doesn't take itself too seriously. Firestone didn't. It was more intent on keeping me reading than on making me think.

I also liked how the book was exactly the right length; if it had been any shorter, I would have felt as if the plot was squashed. Any longer, and I would have tired of the material. And while the base story of the plot is a traditional mix of cliches, the children who should read it wouldn't know that, and it wouldn't affect their enjoyment of it.

I highly applaud Damien J. Nash for his wonderful little book and bid him to keep writing, because I think he'll be great someday. And I highly recommend that young dragon fans give Firestone a try.

5 stars!

I love this book. Damien Nash is a natural storyteller with a truly vivid imagination. He creates an archaic world that is atmospheric and all absorbing. Prophesy is always a great subject for a novel, given the way a work of fiction slowly reveals itself to the reader. A real pager turner that will have you wanting a sequel.

My review of Firestone! Thumbs Up

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect 'beginner's guide' to sword and sorcery!, 22 Nov 2012
By David Wailing (London, UK)

Firestone would make a great 'first fantasy novel' for a young adult reader. It's a classic tale, including lots of exciting ingredients such as dragons, mystical crystals, prophecies, quests, swordfights, treachery, epic battles and more!

The dragons themselves are not monsters but proper characters who share the world of Talgard with humans. The central character Toegun shares a symbiotic relationship with his dragon Calia, and they make an appealing pair who draw you into the story. There is a large amount of detail and every scene is described thoroughly, something else which may appeal to YA readers more than mature ones.

I was actually more impressed with Damien Nash himself than with the book. His writing is very skilled but is only just beginning to flow like it should. My overall impression is that this is a decent first novel by someone who is going to be a lot more impressive in the future - watch this space!

RE: Reviews for Firestone

This turned up on .com this morning. Username "Unknown" and it's their only review. Now, if I were looking at this from the other side I might think it's a sock-puppet review. However I have no idea who it's from. Personally, I think Eragon and Hunger Games are better, but I'll take what I can get.

Oh, and I didn't thank David publicly for his review, so thank you! Big Grin

RE: Reviews for Firestone

You're welcome!

Interesting they compare it to Eragon, which has dragons, and The Hunger Games, which has tournaments - both of which feature in Firestone. Maybe you combined two of their favourite things!
