RE: BBC ArticleQuote: If a writer isn't JK "Harry Potter" Rowling or EL "50 Shades" James, how best to crank up book sales? Win one of the increasing proliferation of literary prizes, says Sarah Dunant. Generally, I'd say it worked against you. I won't bother with the Booker shortlist as I'd consider them literary and I don't read that sort of book, if it's one of the others I probably haven't heard of it so I'll assume it's some Mickey Mouse competition and again, not bother. Winning one will increase sales, sure, but the chances of a self-published author winning? Infinitesimal. Even for the established there's no guarantee (how do you define best?): Quote: It doesn't mean that wonderful books don't win awards or that vibrant new writers aren't discovered en route. But it does mean that prizes are a kind of lottery. |
