How was it for you?

A day's gardening has given me the chance to take stock of the gardening year.
10 days ago I would have said that it had been a disaster, but the glorious spell of weather we're enjoying has allowed a partial rescue.
Anything that was supposed to crop in the summer was a waste of time. Peas, beans, courgettes, onions, spinach, lettuce and soft fruit were all consumed by pests or disease - or simply drowned.
But everything due to crop this month looks good. The rhubarb has loved all the rain; golden raspberries are weighed down with fruit; the salsify, Swiss chard and yellow beetroot all look good. Even the outdoor tomatoes are turning red. And the sweetpeas are amazing - the whole garden is full of their scent.
I'm thinking that if we are to have more of these wet, stormy summers I may have to have a different planting scheme.
Anyone have any suggestions for food crops that slugs/snails hate and that can survive monsoons?

RE: How was it for you?

It's been a poor year for me too, but partly that's because my garden is too shady where I grow veg and I'm thinking of changing it round when I have more time. It's desperately dry just now. I have a courgette or two coming along, and some beans, and the tomatoes in pots haven't done so badly, really. I need to get out there and do some work, but just now I want to get the next novel up, one of two waiting in the wings.

My enthusiasm for gardening has taken a bit of a downturn just now

My successes were peas (for the second year) and potatoes and tomatoes ( which I don't like) for the first time. I don't think my sweet peas were as good as last year. My carrots and beans were a complete failure.
Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

My nerines were late this year, but at least they flowered. I feared I'd lost them in all the sogginess and cold.

My carrots were a huge success.
The onions are really small, the only consulation being - they are tasty roasted whole.
Potatoes were a disaster.
Nasturtiams were late, but ended up flowing with blooms and spilling all over the path - really pretty.

Did your nasturtiums miss the dreaded cabbage white butterfly being late? And have you tried eating the flowers? I bite the spurs off (first checking for flea beetles etc). Delicious

We had no butterfly damage. I avoid doing brassicas - it's so demoralising when they all get eaten - so maybe they never found my garden this year. We tend to eat the leaves more than the flowers, though they do look lovely in a salad.
