Yes, it was sad. I think it captured the helplessness of old age.
The few remaining survivors of the camps were ancient, as were the Nazis; the Nazi-hunting organisation that Julian belonged to appeared to have faded away as the public appetite for pursuing justice diminished. But the outrage at what had happened to him, his friends and his future wife, was still driving him but, as you say, the petty things he was able to do scarcely seemed like a satisfying revenge.

At least he did find them in the end and I think that was enough for him. He was in the home and could keep an eye on them from a distance, knowing where they were. He knew in his mind that there was nothing he could realistically do, but he had the achievement of knowing he had finally tracked them down.

Only happy when I am immersed in a good Kindle book Thumbs Up
