My Mum hasn't had it yet, so I am not sure Tony. I did mine manually. Smile

RE: Kindle Keyboard Software Update 3.4 Released : New Features

Having read through the comments about an update for K4 (?) in the general forum, and people complaining about a new airplane mode / missing wireless option etc... I came here to the Kindle Keyboard section to see that we too have an update. Saw Lou's summary and wanted to know if that was the full extent of the update i.e., no missing Turn Wireless on / off option. Also I value the audio side of my KK, nothing missing there I hope. Any comment? Thanks.

I haven't had any problems with turning wireless on or off since doing the update Neil, and I don't use the audio function so haven't tried that I am afraid.

I can also report that installing the new 3.4 firmware didn't effect the screensaver hack that I had just installed. I still have no dead authors staring back at me!

I can't help think that the best screensaver that Amazon could have used would be the cover of the book that you're reading, when you send it to sleep. (If you would find that embarrasing Whistle, it could always be optional

RE: Kindle Keyboard Software Update 3.4 Released : New Features

I've turned on the "parental controls", but has anyone else got confused by this? It appears that you have to click and "turn off" to turn it on, and "turn on" to turn if off. Is it just me?

(The only bit I've turned on is the access to the archive so that darling son who sometimes reads books on there doesn't realise what a, ahem, wide and diverse range of (free) books I download Whistle )

Calibre support for Kindle Keyboard Software Update 3.4

Pleased to see Calibre have already got an update available. The update...
Kindle driver: Turn on sending of azw3 files to Kindles by default, since the KK now has azw3 support.
On the ball.

Have just run the update manually. Warning it takes at least 5 minutes. Even when you get to the Kindle screensaver you get the progress bar for when you do the long reset. Think you would need to be sure you have plenty of battery life.

I probably won't use the features, but the font does look a little clearer....? Maybe....

And... Amazon sent me a note by Whispernet thanking me for updating and outlining what those new features (the ones I probably won't use) are. Nice touch.

Yes, you need strong nerves for this (especially as I had the screensaver hack installed) there are some heart-stoppingly long pauses at a couple of points eg when the progress bar is maybe 90% done, it just sat there for ages! I had to walk away and have a coffee.

Its the Calibre application that has the update and that needs to be downloaded to your pc. The version number is 0.8.69, it was offered as an update automatically when I started up Calibre the other day on my pc ( as it always does when updates are available ). The update switched on the KF8 output format automatically, but you can switch back to mobi if you want.
If you want to manually update the Kindle to its new o/s verssion 3.4 then use Lou's link ( the first post in this thread ) it'll take you to Amazons download page where there are full instructions and the file to download. It was quite painless.
