Fire HD as divx player

Has anyone tried playing divx/mp4/mkv type files that they've copied onto the fire hd?

I'm thinking about getting either the uk 7" or importing a US 9" fire hd to replace my recently deceased laptop that was mainly used for watching dvd's etc that i've already transcoded to divx/xvid/mkv/mp4 (depending on how long ago and what mood i was in when i did it!). The 9" sounds ideal if it will do this well and have the added bonus of e-reader and a bit of web browsing etc.

Not the Kindle Fire HD as they aren't shipping yet, but MP4's have been fine on the original Fire. MKV and DivX aren't supported by the built in player as far as I know, but you can always use something like VLC or similar.

What's more, the new Kindle Fire HD has a mini HDMI out port, so you should be able to plug it into a TV as well with the right cable.

sounds promising! i assume vlc will need to be sideloaded. Does vlc manage to make good use of the hardware, or does it tend to do it in software and thrash the processor (instead of the dedicated graphics)?

On a similar vein, has anyone managed to get DLNA streaming from a home server over wifi working with a fire? with the more limited storage and no card slot for expansion i could keep a small amount on device for weekends away/holidays, but just stream from my home pc with my full library, no copying needed when at home.
