Any good quality micro-USB mains adapter will do, including the old Kindle chargers. The only advantage of the Fast Charger is that it is a couple of hours quicker.

Having read 'reviews' on the charger I didn't bother ordering on with my Fire, as I planned to use my KK3 charger. Then I noticed that new purchases of the Fire give you the option to buy the 'fast' charger for £8.99 if ordered at the same time as the tablet. I gave customer services a ring and said having bought my Fire a couple of weeks back, I would like the charger after all as it was worth a try at the cheaper price. No problem, they refunded me £10 off the Fire price (which I had in my bank within 12hrs) to put toward the full price charger. That turned up in 48hrs. Nice one Amazon.
I've compared recharging a 'flat' battery (auto shutdown state) using both the standard (white) plug old Kindle charger and the new one and yes it does speed up the charging by an average of 60 to 70 minutes. Thats worth £8.99 of my money.
As for the cases I too picked up a cheapy for $4 free p&p from the US, didn't like it so got one for £2.99 free p&p from Hong Kong (arrived in a week). Its a smart vertical folder and fits like glove, real leather to boot plus they chucked in a stylus which I use all the time now (highly recommended) as I've got big mitts.

I am assuming that most folks sleep at some time? That is the time to charge with either type of charger. As Lou suggests (above) there are dozens of USB chargers around at very reasonable prices - mine is a Nikon one that I got with a compact camera a couple of years ago.
I do think it immoral however that such an essential piece of kit isn't included in the box.

I bought a 2amp USB mains charger, not waiting 11 hours to charge my daughters kindle fire, about 3 hours with this one
