Calling children's authors and other generous people...

93% of schools in South Africa don't have libraries. Here's you chance to help a non-profit organisation bring books to South African children.

I received an appeal for books by email and thought I'd pass on the info as it seems to be a very good cause. The organisers have written a summary especially for KUF and UKAKF. Here it is:

Quote: Zingela Ulwazi, meaning "Hunt for Wisdom" in Zulu, is a not for profit organisation co-ordinating donations of books and library materials for schools in South Africa, 93% of which don't have libraries. We are after excellent, inspiring books in tiptop condition to help us fill libraries with a full spectrum of information for primary and high schools. Our UK collections will be shipped to South Africa, care of a generous freight sponsor.

The emphasis is on children's fiction, non-fiction including dictionaries and reference books and books that are "must read" or come highly recommended.

To donate new and quality used books, please contact Stella Horgan (SA): stella.horgan@hotmail.com / Colette ONeill (UK): coletteoneill00@yahoo.com

Stella also asked me to say that this is relatively new project which is still in its start up phase, but it has solid partners in the Seeds of Light and Andries Botha Foundation and a broad network of support.

A website will be up shortly. In the meantime, you can find out more on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ZingelaUlwazi

Moon Dance is about a private investigator who happens to be a vampire. Samantha Moon is a wife and mother and FBI agent, who became a vampire after a brutal attack 6 years ago.

I do have a bit of a problem in those 6 years. Things happen in this book that I'm sure should have happened years previously. The story doesn't go into any of her past, just the present.

This is quite a light read. It doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, although it's not played for laughs.

I wasn't sure how "vampiry" or "other-worldy" this would be but in the main, it's a straight detective story, just with a side of the paranormal.

I did quite enjoy it and would certainly try a bit more.

Sugarwater Ranch by Stephanie Berget--A Rodeo Romance

Sean O’Connell’s life is perfect, or it was until his partying lifestyle affected his bull riding. Now he’s ended the season too broke to leave the Northwest for the warm southern rodeos. When a wild night with his buddies gets out of hand, he wakes up naked, staring into the angry eyes of a strange woman. His infallible O’Connell charm gets him nowhere with the dark-haired beauty. It’s obvious she’s not his usual good-time girl, so why can’t he forget her?
Bar-manager Catherine Silvera finds a waterlogged, unconscious cowboy freezing to death in front of the Sugarwater Bar. She saves his life--then runs faster than a jackrabbit with a coyote on its tail. Any man who makes his living rodeoing is bad news, especially if he thinks partying is part of the competition. He’s everything she doesn’t want in a man, so why can’t she shake her attraction to the rugged cowboy?
Sugarwater Ranch is a contemporary western romance set in the world of rodeo. Here is an excerpt:

As Catherine lay in the dark, her mind wouldn’t quit whirling. Having a stranger in her house unsettled her. Even though she knew his name, she really didn’t know him. She hadn’t seen Sean since she was twelve.
Her feet hit the cold floorboards, and she padded across the room to her antique dresser. Pushing and shoving, again and again, she moved the heavy piece of furniture until it stood guard in front of her bedroom door. It wasn’t as good as a deadbolt lock, but better than nothing. This way he couldn’t sneak up on her while she slept. She doubted he was going to wake in the next twelve hours, but a girl couldn’t be too careful.
She’d lived by herself since she’d returned to Dalhart, so it never occurred to her to get a lock for her bedroom door. Tomorrow she’d call Uncle Ray and have him pick up a deadbolt at the hardware store. She’d be prepared for the next time, if there was a next time.
As the first pink rays of dawn lit the sky, Gator woke her from a deep sleep, whining and pawing at her bedding. On a normal night, he stayed outside and had the run of the yard. He was ready for his normal night.
With Sean in the house, Catherine had kept the dog in her room as added protection, but now he wanted out. She felt her way across the room, flipped the latch then slid the window open. Gator hopped through into the large backyard and began to explore his territory. After closing the window, she dropped back into bed. By the time her eyelids had closed, she was asleep again.
Uncle Ray owned the old farmhouse where she’d lived since she’d come back to Dalhart. It was less than three miles from the bar and one of the perks of the job. Living alone, Catherine was used to her house being silent unless she made noise. She heard someone moving outside her bedroom door, and panic filled her sleep-fogged brain.
Memories of the night before flooded back. The man she’d brought home must be awake. She heard mumbling and a small crash, followed by loud swearing. She pulled the covers up to her chin and debated what to do. Did she want to leave the safety of her room? If she waited long enough, maybe he’d go away. Then she remembered his truck was still at the bar. He wasn’t going anywhere.
She pulled on jeans, running shoes, and a thermal shirt. After pushing the dresser just far enough to slip through, she turned the doorknob slowly so as not to make a sound and inched open the door. The hall was empty, but the sound of water running let her know someone was in the bathroom.
With her back pressed against the wall, she was careful to be quiet as she crept along the hallway. Leaning forward, she stuck her head around the corner of the door.
Quiet be damned. There, in the buff, was one of the nicest butts she'd ever had the privilege of ogling. Not that she'd seen many naked men’s butts, but she was sure this was prime real estate. Holy cow, where was her cell phone when she needed a camera?
The man stood at the sink with his head under the faucet, her quilt pooled at his feet. She should leave, she really should, but her feet were pasted to the floor, her heart beating so hard she was afraid he'd hear. Her fingers tingled with the desire to touch. Without thinking, she put her hand against the door, moving it just enough for the hinge to screech.
He straightened, and looking in the mirror, stared directly into her eyes.
She'd been caught, and she wanted to run, but the sight of his green eyes locked on her kept her motionless.
Without a word, he bent to retrieve the quilt. Wrapping it around his waist, he turned to face her, and her eyes focused on his six-pack abs. The slight movement of his mouth as he smiled drew her attention to his face. The scar running through his left eyebrow kept him from being a pretty boy. He was the whole package, candy to her sweet tooth. Then she remembered how she’d found him last night. Stepping back into the hallway, she put her hands on her hips and raised her chin. No matter how good-looking, he wasn’t the man for her. To Catherine, life was more than partying till she dropped.

The Things We Never Said by Susan Elliott Wright

This is an absolutely superb read. It is a story told in two halves with each chapter alternating between the two strands of the story, which then eventually dovetail together.

The first story is that of Maggie, who we first meet as a mental health patient in 1964. Maggie has no recollection of her life before entering the hospital and her story is divulged as she slowly starts to remember when we find out that she has had to make some very brave decisions which will affect her and others for a long time to come. It is not a pretty read, the events that brought her to this point in life and her treatment in hospital are very moving and quite harrowing at times.

The second story is that of Jonathan and takes place 40 years on. We meet him at a time when everything is going wrong in his life including, but not exclusively, problems at work and his father's death and the strain everything is putting on his marriage have really brought him to a low point. The only thing he has to look forward to is the birth of his first child. There are times in the book where you feel that he isn't getting the support he needs from his wife Fiona, but as a pregnant woman she has her own set of priorities. As the book says, when a woman is pregnant, she is the most important person in the world so when, on top of everything else, an unexpected visitor arrives with some quite shocking news that will have far reaching implications for Jonathan, he really feels he is on his own.

As I read the book, moving towards the point where the two stories meet up, I could appreciate how well the author had plotted this suspense filled story, which is very unusual, poignant and thought provoking. Like a jigsaw puzzle, each part of the storyline very neatly fits together until eventually you see the whole picture, with no spares.

There are some very serious issues in the book, which are dealt with in a very matter of fact way, not too melodramatic, but just right. It wasn't a book that I could sit and read in one go, partly because I didn't want it to end, but I kept having to put it down to catch my breath and take it all in.

It really is a special read, about parenthood, love, loss and mental health; one that I found very emotional and when it reached its very satisfying ending, I had to wipe a little tear away from my eye.

Hello,
I'm so pleased to find this forum and join it. I'll read virtually anything with a good plot, well-researched and credible characters, but my favourite genres are thriller, historical, alternate history (my own!). I adore William Boyd novels, Simon Scarrow, Lindsey Davis, Robert Harris, if you want big names, but I'm open to read anything. A clever twist is good, but I'm not fond of 'clever for clever' sake, or self-referential if you want to be formal. ;-)

I'm also an author - my first book, INCEPTIO, an alternate history thriller, set in a 21st century Roman state, came out this March and seems to be have found some fans...

Off the KUF - a new Kindle Users Forum short fiction anthology!

Kindle User Forum is producing an anthology of general fiction and invites all indie authors on the forum to contribute!

The title will be Off the KUF: Short fiction from the Kindle Users Forum. It will be published by KUF on Amazon as a Kindle eBook.

This anthology is intended to raise funds to keep the forum running so that we can all continue to enjoy it. Therefore all sales income will go directly to KUF and not to the contributing authors.

However, the anthology will serve as a platform for you to reach new readers, demonstrate your writing and get your work noticed. Authors are encouraged to help promote the anthology, which KUF will be advertising as much as possible.

I will be editing the anthology, to be published by Lou on behalf of KUF. Feel free to contact me with any questions by posting them on this thread, messaging me on KUF or email to anthology@kuforum.co.uk

Contributions:

We are aiming for a high quality collection of stories that cover multiple genres. Variety will be one of the selling points of this book! Please avoid outright erotica as this is a specialised genre (KUF may also produce an erotica-only anthology).

We are looking for any of the following:

Short fiction, between 1,000 words and 30,000 words in length. Anything from a very short story to a novella.

Poetry, of any length.

Drabbles (stories exactly 100 words long).

Please provide your submissions in Microsoft Word format by email to anthology@kuforum.co.uk

Rules for submission:

You may only submit one drabble per person. (So if you've written several, choose your favourite!) Otherwise you may submit as many pieces as you wish.

You may submit previously published as well as brand new work. Do not submit anything that is not your own original work. Do not submit anything co-written with another author unless with permission.

You may submit work that is related to an existing book or series that you have already written. However, please make sure that your submission works as a standalone piece, and does not rely on the reader having read your other work. This anthology should be as accessible as possible to new readers.

Copyright will remain with the original author in all cases. You may re-use or re-publish your submissions elsewhere at any time.

Timescales:

The deadline for all submissions is Monday 30th September 2013.

We aim to publish the book in October or early November 2013 - date to be confirmed.

Finally, we want this anthology to be as much fun to produce as it is to read! This is a terrific opportunity to produce a high quality professional ebook that will serve as a calling card for KUF and for all contributors. So get writing!

It's going to sound very naive to you more experienced authors, but I was really expecting, er, more. And I am now full of self doubt about whether I might have spent all that time writing a rubbish book.
I just wondered whether anyone could offer advice about how it was for you in your early days. And what if anything turned it around for you.
At present I don't know whether to continue with book two. I love writing but I also need to eat :-)
