New Thread button and question on editing posts - licenced - 19 Oct 2010 12:47 PM

Hi there,

I have a question on editing posts, which I'll come to below.

First, I was wondering where to post this and thought the 'Forum Information' sub-forum would be OK. The 'New Thread' button appears, but on clicking on it I'm given an error saying things like my account may be suspended. Can the 'New Thread' button simply not be shown for users that don't have permission to post in that particular forum, and any others?

Next, my original question. A couple of times I've tried to edit a post but been told it's too late - there's a 15 minute cut off. This is sensible, but a little annoying if I am under the 15 minutes when I start editing, type my amendments and then am over 15 minutes when I post - I lose my changes.

Related to that, I've seen the feature whereby a second post on the same topic shortly after the first gets added to the first post. That's quite a nice idea, although I sometimes just skip and miss the addition on other people's posts because I assume that anything under a line is their signature ... but what's the rules for this - is it anything under an hour or something?

Dave

The only forum where New Thread posting is restricted is in the Book Club. That’s to stop people getting bogged down with too many threads when we are all following just three books. The current book discussion, the Book we are reading and the book we are taking suggestions for and then voting on.
If there needs to be a New Thread created then just suggest it and we will try to oblige.

In that case there is a problem with the 'Forum Information and Rules' forum because using the New Thread button in there gives me:
Quote: You do not have permission to access this page. This could be because of one of the following reasons:
Your account has either been suspended or you have been banned from accessing this resource.
You do not have permission to access this page. Are you trying to access administrative pages or a resource that you shouldn't be? Check in the forum rules that you are allowed to perform this action.
Your account may still be awaiting activation or moderation. (Resend Activation Code)
You have accessed this page directly rather than using appropriate forms or link.

The same happens on the Book Club forum. My suggestion is that the button be removed/not shown if the user doesn't have permission to create a thread to avoid confusion.

Dave

I have opened up a new Thread for members to make suggestions for new threads within the 'Forum Information and Rules' Sub forum
I will do the same in the Book Club sub forum

Good stuff. Is it possible to remove the New Thread button completely though to avoid confusing someone who doesn't have permission to create a new thread in that forum from trying it?

Hi Licensed,

I am currently in the middle of tons of work at the moment, so I can't address this at length, but I will look at this tonight.

Hi Licensed,

Finally got to look at this after having my broadband out for the whole evening.

Firstly, I have changed the edit time to 45 minutes (it was 15) - this should be enough I think to correct any mistakes or make any additions. I have also disabled the post merging which defaults to 60 minutes. I think this is moot now with the longer edit time.

As far as I can determine, it is not possible to have the new thread button disabled where no permissions exist via the theme settings presumably because quite intense permission calculations would need to be viewed on every view of the forum (as opposed to when the button is clicked). It would be achievable by editing the core code of the forum software, but I am reluctant to do this as it will break automatic updates to the software. It could also be done via a plugin but because of the performance hit I mentioned earlier I don't think it would be a good idea moving forward.

I agree that the message it shows is misleading, so I will look into changing this to be more descriptive.

The only forums that have no thread creation permissions are the Forum information and rules which are resevered for Admin and Mods and the book club which is controlled by Jaxom.

Thanks for the feedback.
