How do I serve a "cease and Desist Notice" please? - LindaGruchy - 08 Apr 2014 02:57 PM

Someone's nicked Spigg's Wood. They are stupid enough to say that it's published by Wiley! Wiley have given me some information, bless them, but I don't know how to serve a notice.

That's terrible, Linda. I take it someone is selling DISW as their own?

I'm afraid I can't help with legal information - and if it's abroad it might be very difficult to enforce.

You could provide some more information and ask your fellow authors to contact them - a sort of 'send the boys round' but in a digital-not-getting-hurt sort of way. Also that might highlight if they've thieved any other books too.

Depends where it's sold. If it isn't through any of the big retailers, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Doing a bit of googling, I found a couple of amateur-looking sites selling (or trying to sell) pirated copies of my book. I assumed it happened to everyone.

That's awful! I'm not sure but I'll see if I can find anything online about it and if I do will post here for you. How did you find out? This is scary - how can they think to get away with these sorts of things? Really sorry it's happened Linda and if I can help in any way let me know.

Found something that may be helpful Linda - hope it is.

Linda, if you have time, pop into your local Citizen's Advice Bureau. They should be able to help or sign post you to somebody who can. Sorry this has happened to you.

This is brilliant. Well done AK.

Of course it's long winded. But it has to be.

Before going to the trouble of composing and sending a letter, possible shortcuts might be an email warning the website owners of your intentions, then if that doesn't work an email to the webhosting company.

I'd be interested in how you get on.

Mine was pirated within about three months of its publication. I felt truly sick. But at least it had my name on it. Several pirate sites run it still.

I read a thread on Goodreads where people were asking the names of the 'free' sites. Some authors simply called them thieves, but many more replies just gave them the names of the sites.

Linda has someone published it under their own name? If so, you'll have a pretty good case for stopping them. With the pirates, they can be stopped but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I think it's a case of getting Google and other search engines to pull the plug on them.

I'll be cheering you on. Please do keep us informed.

Linda, I don't know how you go about stopping it, but I hope you manage to do something, they are scum. Angry
