I can understand someone being upset if their book gets 1* reviews before it's even out. Didn't she pull the book in the end? (or am I thinking of someone else)

Yes, she's the one who pulled the book.
Apparently Goodreads readers mark books for all sorts of reasons, not just because they've read them. There's a great thread on KBoards about How Goodreads Works, and what authors should and shouldn't do.

Thanks, Rosen, I'll give that a try! At the moment the bad reviews don't seem to be harming sales - they've picked up a bit if anything :-) - weird!

I've mentioned before, but I use goodreads as my bookshelf and therefore will rate books I haven't finished as 1 star and date them 100 years ago as I want them marked as read in my list and don't want to take them off. I'm sure I write "not finished" in the review bit.
Perhaps I should just delete the books from my kindle and my lists, but I don't want to delete them completely in case I come across them again and waste my time thinking it might be good Big Grin

I got a one star review, didn't bother me in the slightest (he lied).

Actually, I looked at her other reviews, and very quickly got the idea that she was really into bad BDSM porn, and THEN it didn't bother me in the slightest.
But WOW, she really didn't like my book.

Quote: "I prefer a story where something actually happens and I am not reading one man's depressing thoughts for page after page."
Thanks, lady.

Seriously though, if I could please all the people all of the time, then I wouldn't be self-publishing on Kindle, would I? Wink

How about setting up a new list?

RE: One Star Reviews - Mads Sorensen - 08 Feb 2014 08:01 PM

Just had a second one star review after ten months with no reviews at all. Haven't sold anything the past three days either. But hey-ho, who ever said writing was easy.

RE: One Star Reviews - davidwailing - 08 Feb 2014 08:48 PM

Sorry to hear that, Mads. My own reviews have plumetted too, if that makes you feel any better.

RE: One Star Reviews - Tim_A - 08 Feb 2014 09:10 PM

My dratted 1-star still shows at the top of the "recent reviews" block, even after 5 months! But then both reviews and sales have pretty much ground to a halt

Yeah...1 star reviews are a pain. It wouldn't be so bad if they gave you useful information to improve. I don’t think most of them have read the book. Here is a review I have with Barnes and Noble, who, like goodreads, do not have to buy or read the book to review it
This is regarding an adventure novel set in Thailand

I need help with all the rpers nowadays! All they do is chat! I ASKED THE LEADER TO ORGANIZE BORDER PATROLS AND THEY SAID oh whats a border patrol? Are you f*cking kitten me?

I have had similar ones with Goodreads,

multiple-choice question

They have read and digested the novel?

Their literary talents are cleverly disguised and this is a secret code?.
They are living proof of what happens when people pee in the gene pool?

I’ll let you decide.

Even though we write for enjoyment and opinions matter; sometimes you need to take reviews with a pinch of salt and a chuckle
