Which Kindle?

I don't know if this thread would be more at home elsewhere on the forum, (if so then moderators, please could you move it to where it sould have gone?), only I couldn't see a more appropriate heading.

I am hoping to get a Kindle this Christmas and am undecided as to which model to get. I have my own inclinations, but with such a wealth of knowledge on this forum the obvious thing to do was to ask for your feedback.

Have you bought a Kindle and subsequently wished you'd bought another model instead (pehaps with better functionality, or maybe with less - simpler to use)?

If you have a WiFi model then do you actually use it?

Does your Kindle get used purely for reading books, or do you also use it as a tablet?

The Fire is eagerly awaited in the UK, but although it looks great and has good functionality, it's also more expensive, and would you really use that additional functionality rather than picking up your laptop or logging onto your PC?

Would the Fire's colour screen be a big enough plus to compensate for it not (presumably) being as easy to read in bright sunlight?

I'd really appreciate any views. thoughts, opinions. Thank you.

The Kindle isn't really useable as a tablet, you would need to get a Kindle Fire for that.

My wife has a basic Kindle (no touch screen, no colour, no key pad and no 3G), and by default, I'm tending towards getting the same model. Against this I have a track record of always buying the 'best' I can afford. What I'm not sure about is whether what I'd be missing out on if I went for this model would really be much of a loss.

I do realise that most Kindle models aren't suitable for use as tablets (with the exception of the Fire), and don't have any great yearning for a tablet (Kindle or otherwise) anyway, but thought it would be a good idea to hear other views before taking the plunge.

I do have a tablet and love it, but it's blinkin' useless outdoors, in sunlight.
I have the KindleKeyboard3 with wifi. If the browser was a bit quicker and I could get a signal in the garden, I might use the wifi more, but I cannot say I would miss it, as I tend to move my books via USB rather than over wifi. So the wifi isn't a big issue with me.
I suppose if I was to replace mine now, I would be looking at a Touch, or getting a Paperwhite from the US, but to be fair to my little Kindle, I love it and unless it breaks it's going to be here for a while.

I use mine for reading books, or the occasional comic/graphic novel (which would look infinitely better in colour and on a bigger screen!).

I have the basic one which is £69 now - and I can't say i have ever thought "I wish I had bought another model" once. I download using the wifi - and have a backlog of 170 ish books to read - so not being able to get online whilst we are away out of wifi zone isn't ever going to be a problem.

Hi Elaine - do you ever wish you had a larger screen, key pad, or touch-screen navigation?

RE: Which Kindle?

I have the 3G KK and for me it's the only one I want.
My SIL was thinking of one earlier this year and is rich so was going to get a Fire (from US). I told her that for her, the K4 was ideal - she has an iphone so wouldn't do any surfing. She's too busy for foruming, so will just buy mainstream or what I tell her to.
Myself, I like the 3G as I'm forever kuffing in work and there's no wifi around. I have also used it for emailing on holidays. I like the firmness of the KK and the keyboard.
I really don't like touch screens. I haven't tried a Kindle touch, but I would imagine it would do my head in.
I don't wish for a bigger screen as that would mean a bigger body and the kindle is a nice size.
Please put a bowl of water out for hedgehogs and other night-time visitors, you might just save their life.
While you are at it, feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at Garden Wildlife Forum

Thanks Joo - I hadn't realised that you could email from the Kindle 3G (though thinking about it, it does makes sense). I assume you can still use WiFi with the 3G model (for when there's no 3G signal)?
