Using a .com Amazon Gift Card

Needless to say I was chuffed to have an email from a friend of mine in the States gifting me 'Grapes of Wrath'. Very sweet gesture.

Well, much to my first-time-dismay, I can't pick the gift up since my account is a UK one. I thought I might solve it by requesting an exchange certificate, which came, but left me in the same boat. Undecided

I've been having a search around, and the suggestion seems to be to change my country in my Kindle account to the USA, but I'd like to confirm with you guys if that will work.

Do you have any other suggestions for me to receive my friend's gift? I feel a bit embarrassed to tell them that, while I'm certainly grateful for thinking of me, I still don't have the book.

Many thanks. And I'm very happy to find this really complete bees-knees forum. I think I'll spending plenty of time here.

Many thanks for your answer winmillp.

Hopefully, some one will come along with a cool solution. I did read that changing the country in my Kindle account settings could work, but I've also read bits about an account or two getting blocked if this is done.

I'd love conformation of this work-around. Of course, it's a bit of a bend on their T&C Confused , but I'd just dearly love to find away to say "thank's mate, great book!" to my friend.

By the way, I did write to Amazon/Kindle CS a few days back asking for help ....... but no joy with a reply from them so far.

I never got any joy from amazon. I thought it was because here in Spain we don't have customer support in English. With a world wide company you would think you could send gifts to any country they have a site

RE: Using a .com Amazon Gift Card

I'm not sure how best to fix this (though changing your country will probably work, and if you just do it once you shouldn't get any bother with your account being blocked - but I've never done it myself so can't guarantee it!), but your friend would have been better giving you a gift voucher for the cost of the book via the uk website, as that's the only way it can 'easily' be done.

From the Amazon.com help pages:

Quote: Eligibility to Redeem a Kindle Book Gift
Kindle book gift notifications can be sent to any e-mail address. If the giver and the recipient do not live in the same country, the book may not available to the recipient due to copyright restrictions. In these cases the recipient will be given the option to request an exchange for gift credit on their Amazon.com account during the redemption process, or they may contact Customer Service for assistance in exchanging the book.

So the safe option is to wait for help from customer service, but your friend my just have to request a refund and try sending you a gift voucher from the uk site.

Thanks l_macd

I'll wait for any reply from Amazon CS, and post an update here if any resolution is possible through them.

Fingers crossed.

Gift cards are tricky. An American writer sent me one for his book which cost $ 0.99 for American residents. But I have to pay VAT + a huge transfer, so my price would be $ 3.44 Sad

RE: Using a .com Amazon Gift Card

Regarding my original post - Hopefully this is useful for future searchers.

I've still had no reply to my email to Amazon Customer Service (12 or so days ago), so I went for the method I'd read while searching around for a solution. I de-registered my Kindle from my UK address (via my Amazon account), and (using a friend's address in USA) registered my Kindle with Amazon.com. I was then able to get the e-book I'd been given.

Thankfully, my Kindle library is intact. However, my Amazon Wish Lists have gone (to be expected I guess). I'm going to wait 10 days before I change my account back to UK, and hopefully I'll avoid getting my wrists smacked by Amazon. I'm really hoping my UK Wish Lists are intact when I change back. It would be a real bummer to lose them.

Of course, this method violates the T&C, but I it really looks like the only way to accept the gift my friend had given me. If I'm thrown on a fire of eternal Amazon damnation as a result, I'll let you know .........

Lesson: if you have any idea that a friend living abroad may offer you an e-book, make sure they gift it through Amazon UK.

RE: Using a .com Amazon Gift Card

I don't think Amazon mind people switching accounts, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. I had $200 worth of gift cards sitting on Amazon.com for ages waiting for me to find something to do with them. Thankfully I ordered a new Kindle Paperwhite with them.

It really is a bit of a pain not being able to transfer them. You can't even buy another gift card with them to pass them on to someone else.

Glad you got it sorted in the end though.

RE: Using a .com Amazon Gift Card

I have struck lucky. I won a free book. The author gifted it from amazon.com so I thought I would not be able to receive it. That's what has happened before. When amazon.com sent notification of the gift I just followed the link for claim your book and it worked. Last time I had one it said not possible from that site because I live in Spain. I still can't buy from there but I'm so happy I got my gift. I hope it stays like that.
