Help re transferring books on Kindles

This post was last modified: 19 Aug 2011 06:38 PM by Anne.
Hello all. I'm thinking of selling my 6 month old WiFi Kindle and getting a 3G instead. If I do sell how do I get all my books off my WiFi and onto my 3G?
Also, it may be a friend I am selling to, is it possible to leave all my current books on the WiFi which is sold, but then put them all back onto my 3G?
Just one other question - is the guarantee transferrable to another party if I sell my WiFi?
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

RE: Selling my Kindle

When you register your new Kindle you can just send all the books to the new one from your Amazon account or from the archive section on the Kindle.

The books if bought through Amazon won't be able to be transferred to another account. You could however leave the Kindle register to your account and the books could be left on the kindle. This wouldn't be the right thing to do but it would let your friend read the books. However any books they bought in the Amazon Store whilst they had the kindle still registered to your account would be charged to your Amazon account and not theres as the kindle wouldn't be registered to them but to you.

No, I don't know the lady that well as to leave my account registered. So do I have to then delete all the books from the WiFi before letting it go?

You need to de-register the kindle from your account, before handing it over. You can do this in your Amazon account - Manage Your Kindle

from Amazon FAQ

Quote: Register/Deregister Your Kindle
Register your Kindle to access features such as purchasing and downloading content. If you no longer have access to your Kindle or transferred it to another user, you should deregister your Kindle from your account.

To register or deregister your Kindle:

If you are not already on the Home screen, press the "Home" button.
Press the "Menu" button. Make sure that wireless is turned on.
Move the 5-way down until "Settings" is underlined and press to select.
Press the 5-way to select "register" or "deregister" from the Settings screen.
If you are registering Kindle, enter your Amazon.co.uk user name and password (the e-mail address and password associated with your Amazon account) using the keyboard.
Navigate the 5-way to select "OK" to finish the process or "Cancel" to abort.
Tip: If your Amazon user name or password contains numbers or characters not present on the Kindle keyboard, press the Symbol (SYM) key to see a menu of additional characters. You can also register or deregister your Kindle on the Manage Your Kindle page.

Selling Your Kindle
If your Kindle is registered to your account, deregister the Kindle before selling it. Deregistering ensures that your Kindle cannot be used to make purchases on your account. Please note that once the Kindle is deregistered, any books, subscriptions, or other content you have purchased from the Kindle Store will no longer be delivered to the device.

Remove all purchased material from the Kindle device.

Personally I think I would also do a hard reset to wipe it completely

Many thanks for the help.

Just a note. I rang Kindle support this morning and I was very surprised to learn that if I return my WiFi to Amazon I can get a refund and purchase the 3G. Clapping hands The refund they have quoted is a very fair price, I think, so I will perhaps be taking that route as I do not think my friend will be willing to pay what I can get from Amazon, and I certainly think she would be better getting a new one for the small extra she would have to pay. WOW Anne, what a great idea from Amazon. No doubt they can then re-sell the Wi-Fi versions as refurbs - I bought one believing I wouldn't want or need the 3g version - but now I am having second thoughts. Methinks I'll contact Amazon and ask what they will offer....
