Kindle books on Sony ereader - confused?

I've just been in M & S looking at the Sony ereader. I have a Kindle, but was looking at the Sony as a possible Christmas present for a family member (forward planning!) - thinking they might prefer the touch screen. My main question was - can you download kindle books from Amazon onto the Sony. The salesman was insistent that you can, but browsing the internet I'm not so sure, and I notice that the Sony is not included in the forum section about Kindle on other platforms. Anyone know the facts, please?

I am afraid the answer is no Daphne as they are different formats - shame on M & S !!!

Thank you, ali, I thought that was the case, but was confused by the salesman. I suspected from talking to him that he didn't really know much about Kindle/ kindle books, but when someone is very insistent, you tend to believe them. Where do sony ereaders get their books from then?

I think the majority come from Waterstones but they can also download the free stuff in a different format to us (I think !!)

(Thanks, Ali!) I will have to check out the Sony ebook provider to see if they get as good a selection as Kindle. I imagine, in the end, all providers will offer the full range.

I spent some time this morning looking at new televisions for a friend. Inevitable I was drawn to examine sony ereaders (no, not switching, just Kindle-obsessive). When I asked about where sony ereader users could get books from I was told Waterstones online (as mentioned above) and also that it was now possible to buy Kindle books from Amazon as they would reformat them for Sony. Is this true?

Seems very unlikely to me. But, many different stores now sell though Amazon. So some of then could be offering other e-book formats. Certainly NOTHING like as easy as the Kindle experience.

Sony ebooks can be bought from Waterstones and WHSmiths online - I know because I used to have a Sony Reader.

Both Waterstones and WHSmith are dreadful ebook stores IMO compared with Amazon. Waterstones can be very expensive, the selection is no where near as good as Amazon and searching for ebooks can be slow and buggy especially in WHSmiths.

That said WHSmiths do sometimes have some good ebook sales and promos.

And no you can't read Amazon ebooks on a Sony - not without converting the ebook into a different file format and also stripping off the DRM protection which can have moral/legal implications. The majority of readers are not going to do this.

Sony readers like ePub files and, again, without converting etc, you can't read those on a Kindle either.

Hi Daphne, I have a Sony ereader and have found the selection of books from Waterstones and W.H.Smiths to be poor compared to Amazon. In fact, I used to get most of my ebooks from U.S based websites. (I bought the Kindle because the Sony has ceased to function). I must admit that I have found the Kindle to be easier to use and I am very impressed with the selection and cost of books on Amazon compared to the other sellers already mentioned.

Very helpful to hear from those of you who have experienced the Sony ereader. I must say that having read your comments I like my Kindle more than ever Kindle Smile

- but I do wonder if some of those who buy the Sony ereader are surprised/ disappointed to find that they can't access the vast Amazon Kindle bookshop, especially when advice in shops can be misleading.
